𝐂𝐡𝐚𝐩𝐭𝐞𝐫 𝟒

Hawkins Middle - 3:00 PM - Monday

Mike's POV

Mike stood at his locker, leaning on the wall and talking with Lucas. He looked at every person walking by, wondering if he'd see the mysterious boy he saw earlier.

"And Max was like- Mike? You there, dude?" Lucas waved his hand in front of Mike's face. Mike blinked his eyes and turned back to Lucas.

"Shit, sorry, what were you saying?" Mike smiled awkwardly at Lucas as he continued rambling, nodding every once in a while to make it seem like he was paying attention.

Mike's eyes widened as another person walked by. It was him. The boy. Mike got a better look at him this time, examining his face as he passed.

"Hey, Lucas," Mike interrupted, "Who's that, that just walked by?" He tore his gaze away from the boy and looked at Lucas.

"Uhhh, Byers, Will Byers, I think, why? You got a crush on him?" Lucas snickered and jokingly punched Mike. He laughed along nonchalantly and turned in the direction this "Will Byers" went.

"Yeah, I'll see you at the game tonight, Lucas." Mike shouted as he walked away. Lucas watched him walk away in disbelief and rolled his eyes, slamming his locker and walking the other direction.

Mike wandered the halls, looking for Will. He didn't know why, but he just had to talk to him. He had to know why the boy seemed so familiar, and why Mike felt so drawn to him.

He entered the courtyard, which was essentially just an outdoor cafeteria. He heard the sound of footsteps and rustling in the leaves somewhere in the distance. It was him- It was Will.

Suddenly, Mike realized what he was doing. He was following this boy he had never talked to, and he planned to do what? Just strike up a friendly conversation after following him around school? Weird! Mike shook his head and took one last look at Will before going to the front of the school, where his bike was parked.

As he biked home, he thought about Will. Why did Byers sound so familiar? Where had he heard that name before? Suddenly, it hit him. Jonathan Byers. Nancy's ex boyfriend. It all clicked. This was Will Byers- The boy he met in 4th grade. They were friends until the day middle school started- The day Mike finally stood up to Troy. Mike and Lucas stayed friends, but they left Will, and another dude- What was his name? Mike thought as hard as he could until he realized he went too far- His house was behind him. He sighed. Why was this boy making his brain so frazzled? He didn't know yet, but he intended on finding out.

When Mike went through the front door, he was immediately smacked in the face by his mother's angry words.

"Why are you home so late? I've been worried sick for almost an hour!" She shrieked, waving her arms wildly.

"I'm sorry, Mom, I was talking to Lucas and just.. Lost track of time, alright? It wont happen again." He was lying through his teeth and he knew his mom could tell, but she just sighed and went back to whatever she was doing before, which was probably gossiping with her friends on the phone and drinking way too much wine. Mike rolled his eyes at the thought and went upstairs to change. He was way too hot in his clothes. 

"Might as well just change into my basketball uniform now." Mike muttered to himself. He showered and changed, and then made his way to the basement so he could call Lucas. He dialed the number and waited. And waited. And waited. And waited. Mike slammed the phone back into it's holder and sighed, flopping down onto the couch. He felt the ache in his legs from pedaling on his bike. He was still thinking about Will. Why did this boy feel so important? Mike hadn't talked to him in years, he hadn't even thought about him until today. He shook his head. He was giving himself a headache from thinking too hard about this.

Mike flopped down on the couch, laying on his back. He didn't realize how tired he was until he shut his eyes. "I'll just sleep for a few minutes" he thought, as he drifted away.
