Hawkins High - 8:30 AM - Wednesday

Mike's POV

"Y'know, I know you're lying." 

Troy's words caught Mike off guard. What did he mean? Mike stopped walking, turning to face Troy.

"What do you mean?"

"You said the fag kissed you. That's not true." Troy spat.

"What? Why else would I be kissing him." Mike could feel his palms sweating and his heart racing. He knew that Troy could see right through him.

"I dunno. Maybe you're a fag too. You were clearly enjoying it." He sounded angry. He towered over Mike, his arms crossed. Mike was shaking. Troy could easily beat him in a fight.

"No- I-" 

Troy scoffed. "Just shut up. You're a fag and you know it." With that, Troy left, stomping back to his class. Mike stood there in the empty hallway, thoughts racing through his head. What could Troy do now? He could easily ruin Mike's life if he wanted to. Behind Mike, Troy was one of the most popular guys in school. Everyone would believe him even if he didn't have proof. Mike's breath hitched as the realization hit him.

Troy was going to tell everyone.

Mike walked out of his last class, making a beeline for the exit. He had no idea how many people Troy had already told. He'd spent basically the entire day in the bathroom, dreading confrontation from anyone.

Will wasn't in 6th period. In fact, Mike hadn't seen him since The Bench. The entire day, guilt had shrouded his thoughts. Remembering what had happened made his stomach hurt. He didn't know why he did it. It was like he wasn't himself. He couldn't control what he was doing until suddenly he was staring at a bleeding, crying Will Byers. The boy he'd met only 3 days ago that he was so infatuated with. 

Will meant everything to him, and then he went and fucked it up.

A hand on his shoulder snapped him back to reality. He realized he was crying. He swiftly wiped the tears from his eyes and turned around to see who was there.

"Hey man. We need to talk." Lucas's concerned eyes met his and Mike's heart dropped. He already knew what Lucas wanted to talk about. Mike nodded and they walked to the courtyard so nobody could hear. He was just glad Lucas didn't seem mad.

"So, I was talking to Troy, and he told me about something he saw this morning." Lucas's voice sounded off. Nervous. Scared. Like he was afraid how Mike would react. And what he did, neither of them expected.

He buried his face in his hands and started sobbing, mumbling "I'm sorry" over and over again. Lucas didn't know what to do. He put his hand on Mike's back, trying to comfort him but failing miserably.

"Hey, dude, I need you to calm down. Talk to me." Lucas's voice was sincere and sympathetic. He didn't care if Mike was caught making out with Will. He didn't care if Mike was gay. All he cared about was Mike's feelings right now.

Mike took a deep, shuddering breath. He used his shirt to wipe his face and looked at Lucas.

"I'm sorry." Mike's voice was deep with sorrow.

"Stop apologizing. You did nothing wrong. Now just tell me what happened." Lucas's hand remained on Mike's shoulder. He took a deep breath before telling Lucas everything. The kiss at the mall, the kissing at the bench, and how he left Will behind. Mike struggled to keep himself from crying, but a sense of relief washed over him once he was done spilling his guts. 

"Ok. Wow." Lucas spoke finally after the two sat in silence for what seemed like forever. He shook his head. "Will Byers? Really? Out of all the dudes at our school you choose Will Byers?" Lucas laughed, and so did Mike.

"So you're not.. Mad?" Mike looked up at Lucas, letting out a sigh of relief. Lucas shook his head.

"Why would I be? I've known since, like, 4th grade." Lucas shrugged.

"How the hell?" Even Mike didn't know until yesterday.

"No way you're that stupid. You made it so obvious!" 

The two kept talking and laughing until Mike realized he had to go home. He hugged Lucas and left, feeling a lot better now.
