Hawkins Middle - 5 PM - Monday
Will's POV
Will and Dustin sat in the bleachers, watching the basketball game. Will didn't really understand basketball, but over the summer, Dustin had gotten really into it, and he planned on joining the team later in the year. They were surrounded by loud cheering and the sound of shoes squeaking on the shiny gym floors. Will was watching Mike the entire game. He was uninterested by everything and everyone else, all he could see and think about was the dark haired boy.
Was he in love with Mike..? No, he couldn't be. He didn't like guys. Or.. Maybe he is? Mike was all he'd been thinking about all day. He studied Mike's face while he played basketball. He had nice features. He was attractive. Well, of course he was attractive, he had all the girls in the school fawning over him.
And maybe one of the boys, too. Will was starting to accept it. It felt so wrong, like he was crazy for liking a boy. Maybe he didn't even like him. Maybe he wanted to be him? No. As much as Will idolized Mike, he didn't want to be popular. Seems too stressful. Too much to think about.
Will looked down at the court, where his eyes met Mike's. They both froze, staring into each other like the other was the only thing that mattered right now. Will's eyes widened. He felt the blood rushing to his cheeks. They held the eye contact. Too long for it to be accidental. They were both staring, and neither wanted to look away.
The final buzzer blared through the gym, making Will jump out of his seat and break the eye contact. Dustin stood up too, making his way towards the big double doors that everyone crowded around. Will was still reeling from the encounter- That's the third time today that Mike had held eye contact with him.
Will couldn't deny it. He liked Mike. His black hair, his charming smile, his dashingly good looks. Will was smitten. Every time he looked at Mike his heart beat fast and he couldn't help but blush. Mike made Will feel something that nobody else had ever made him feel- And he loved it.
Will sat on the bench in the front of the school, waiting for Dustin to call his mom with the phone inside. He watched as every person shuffled into their vehicles and drove home. Dustin sat down next to Will and began rambling about basketball and comics, the usual conversation topics between the two. Will was still deep in thought, pondering whether he really liked Mike or just wanted to feel special, feel like he had a purpose.
"Hey Will, have you seen El?"
Will thought he was hallucinating. Was it really Mike Wheeler in front of him, or was he just going insane?
"I can't find her anywhere." Yup, it was Mike. Standing in front of Will, asking if he'd seen his girlfriend. Will sat there in awe, looking up into Mike's eyes, shocked he even remembered his name.
"No, I, uh, I haven't seen her, sorry." Will was stuttering. He could tell his own voice sounded nervous, terrified. He expected Mike to just walk away after this and go look for her, or ask someone else, but he stayed.
"That's alright. Will you help me look for her? I really need to tell her something." Mike's voice was music to Will's ears. But why was he asking Will, of all people, to help him? There were plenty of other people still waiting to be picked up, plenty of them were more popular than Will, so why him? Was this some kind of sick prank? Was Mike gonna take him somewhere, where Troy and the other bullies were waiting to use him like a punching bag? That seemed like the only plausible reason.
Just as Will started stuttering, Dustin came to the rescue.
"Uh, my mom's here to pick us up. I don't think we have time." Dustin pointed to the car pulling up. Will sighed inwardly, mentally thanking Dustin's mom for driving up at the perfect time.
"That's alright, I could give Will a ride home on my bike. I really need help finding El, it's urgent!" Mike seemed so desperate about getting Will's help. He still didn't know why. But it was too late now. Dustin was already yelling his goodbyes from the front seat of his mom's car. Will was panicking. His heart was beating fast. He could feel his cheeks turning pink and his palms sweating. He looked up at Mike, praying he wouldn't notice his bright cheeks. Mike smiled and extended his hand, intending to help Will up. He wiped his hand on the side of his pants and grabbed Mike's hand.
Woah. He was standing in the parking lot of his high school, about to help Mike Wheeler find his girlfriend? And he was touching his hand??? This couldn't be real. He savored every moment his hand was touching Mikes. It all felt like some crazy dream. He stood up, now almost eye level with Mike. They stared into each others eyes, hands still touching. Will pulled his hand away, embarrassed.
"Thanks for the help, I really needed it." Mike grinned at Will, who smiled softly back. Once he was behind Mike, he pinched himself. It wasn't a dream. This was real. He was following Mike through the empty school, looking for his girlfriend.
That's when the thought hit him. Mike has a girlfriend. Why would he ever be into Will? I mean, it's not like Mike would be into him even if he didn't have a girlfriend.
Will heard Mike asking questions about El, but responded with no every time he'd ask. He was so caught up in his thoughts that he didn't realize they were at The Bench until Mike was gesturing for Will to follow him in.
No, this didn't feel right. It didn't feel right at all. Why was Mike Wheeler leading him, Will Byers, into the most popular makeout spot in all of Hawkins High alone at night? What if Troy and James were in there, ready to beat up Will?
But Mike's smile looked so genuine, so kind, so warm. So welcoming. So Will followed him into the small, sheltered area. It really was beautiful in there. The overgrown vines on the cement block walls had little purple flowers speckled all over, and the sun was setting above them, shining in a way that illuminated Mike's face. He looks so nice, Will thought. They smiled at each other, admiring the beauty that was surrounding them.
