"Hey, Cody, calm down okay. I just came back to get my stuff." Griffin said raising his arms in defense.
"This is your friend?" I whispered to Griffin.
"Yeah, he's a really nice guy once you get to know him. He just doesn't take shit from people." Griffin said back. Cody was still marching towards us. The anger in his eyes was obvious, I had to do something otherwise this guy was going to seriously injure Griffin.
"Hi Cody, I'm Kylie Heffner, a friend of Griffin's." I said taking a few steps forward and outstreaching my hand. This made Cody stop short, he ran a hand through his sandy brown hair studying me for a moment before cautiously shaking my hand.
"Cody Wallace." He answered warily,
"We came to grab Griffin's stuff. He's staying with me. I didn't think you wanted to be stuck with all his junk so I came to take it off your hands." I babbled trying to diffuse the tension.
"Uh, yeah, sure. Follow me." Cody said then turned and walked at a slower pace back to the house. I turned to look at Griffin who was completely dumbfounded.
"Stay here." I said then followed Cody. Cody opened the front door and walking in leaving it open, I noticed the floor wasn't in the best shape so I gently placed my foot on the boards, easing my weight into them. They held, so I continued.
"It's uh...a nice place you have here." I said trying to make conversation. I heard Cody laugh from farther in the house.
"I admire your attempts to be polite Kylie, but you don't have to deny it. This place is shit." He said appearing from a doorway. I smiled,
"Well, it could be worse." I said shrugging, Cody laughed agian.
"That it could." he disappeared back the way he came.
"I gathered all of Griff's stuff into a box." His voice echoes of the slightly dirty, white walls. Cody reapeared with a cardboard box full of clothes and pictures and other stuff.
"Here," He said handing it to me.
"Careful it's heavy."
"Thanks," I said taking it from him, I shifted its weight until I got a good grip the started walking back out of the house. I was on the porch when Cody called out to me.
"Hey Kylie, he's not a bad guy, really. I may seem like I hate his guts, but he's one of my closest friends. Go easy on him, and don't believe any of the stories he tells you about me. Especially the one about the bear." He said then paused glancing over at Griffin before returning his gaze to me.
"There's something there. I'll give it three weeks, max." He said then laughed going back inside. Slightly confused I walked back to Griffin.
"He's interesting." I said as I reached him. Griffin took the box from me.
"Yeah he's a character, he's a good friend too. I can't believe some of the stories I have about him, I should tell you them sometime." Griffin said, I burst out laughing.
"What?" He asked,
"Nothing, just something Cody said. Come on let's get back home, Kasey's probably waiting for us." I said smiling and getting into the car. Griffin put the box in the back seat the slid in beside me. He sat there for a moment then turned to me.
"He told you about the bear didn't he." He asked and I laughed again. Griffin shook his head,
"Don't believe a word he says." He warned me and reversed out of the driveway.

"The bear gets up on its hind legs and let's out this deafening roar. Cody screams like a little girl, runs off into the woods, and leaves me to defend our food pack from this massive angry black bear." Griffin explains laughing at the memory.
"So...so then I grabbed the stick that we had been using for the fire, and managed to scare the bear away with my amazing fencing skills. Of course then I had to find Cody, he ended up being in one of the canoes trying to leave this island that our campsite was on. I got him to come back but he insisted that we leave right away. That was the last time we were ever in Canada." Griffin explained in between fits of laughter. My stomach hurt from laughing so hard at his retelling of the story.
"Ah...camping in Algonquin Park. Fun times." Griffin sighed then snickered again. We were sitting outside on my deck, Kasey lay in a corner of the deck, tongue lolled out, breathing heavy. Her water dish, a margarine container, was near her, shredded to bits from her moment of playfulness. Griffin and I each had a Coca Cola in our hands, from a case Griffin had bought on the way home from Cody's.
"He sounds like a nice guy." I said shielding my eyes with my hand from the bright sun.
"Yeah, he is." Griffin sighed. We sat there a moment, I could here the waves lapping onto the sandy beach, Kasey breathing, sea birds chirping at each other.
"It's beautiful here." Griffin said
"It is, isn't it. I can't believe I'm going to be living here..." I said in disbelief.
"We." Griffin said and I looked over at him, he was watching me, his eyes were intense but happy, like he was staring at a priceless trophy.
"We are going to be living here." He said gently placing his hand over mine.
