Akaashi's sister used to be loud. She used to bubble with noise, filling the room with her bright dialogue. She used to send the whole family into fits of laughter, then clink her spoon to her glass when she felt the spotlight had been taken away from her for too long.
But she had her voice ripped from her by an evil witch down the road, leaving the burden of conversation to rest on Akaashi's shoulders.
"You're quiet," his dad observed, cutting his salmon into tiny bites. He scraped them off the plate and let them float downward, where they were snatched up by the catfish before reaching the floorboards. DaVinci, the catfish, prissed and sniffed with an open mouth and an arched spine, waiting for more to fall from the sky.
"Sorry," Akaashi mumbled, cutting off a slice of his own fish and holding it between webbed fingers out for the cat. DaVinci took it in his teeth and swam to the corner of the kitchen to dine in peace.
Lottie, the sister, started waving her hands wildly, the same energy and life that had once been in her voice translated into signing. Her movements were fast and sloppy, making them near impossible to read if you hadn't learned right beside her.
His dad blankly stared at her hands.
"She said we have to stop feeding him so much," Akaashi translated. "He's going to get fat."
His dad threw his head back and laughed, clutching his chest. It was obviously forced, but Lottie looked pleased with garnering such a reaction. Her grin stretched ear to ear, even revealing the braces she tried so desperately to hide.
With three more bites, Akaashi had cleared his plate and started clearing the table. Everyone else was still eating, but he had his own glass, the salt and pepper shakers, and a flower vase with long-dead sea lilies drooping from the mouth of the glass balanced on his dish.
"Where are you off to?" His dad demanded as Akaashi cracked open a window. He threw out the sea lillies, but rather than falling into the flowerbed below, they stayed right at eye level, bobbing gently.
The current would take them eventually. Akaashi pulled the window shut.
"I'm heading to Konoha's house, I need help on a math assignment." He swam through the kitchen easily, throwing things in their proper place like second nature. He was used to this rush.
"If it's for school," his dad relented, waving his fork as he spoke. "Be home by 10."
"I will." With that, raced out the door.
He went in the direction Konoha lived, just until he was certain he was out of view of the front windows, then changed course.
He swam up, streaking through the water, blowing bubbles and watching in fascination as they rose.
When he broke the surface, felt his face dry of scales, and shift into skin, he let out a long breath. Here, in the open, he was home.
He allowed himself three gulps of the fresh air before ducking back beneath the waves and heading toward the island. He longed to swim on the surface, watching his hand change from its greenish pallor to tanned skin with every stroke, but even he knew it was too reckless. Going to the surface at all was a death sentence.
