Chapter Four
Laryn's POV
"Hey," Grant said. "Did you hear about the news?"
I sat down at the bench opposite Grant and Calla with my lunch. "No," I responded, making a face. "What happened?"
"Apparently some people in Abnegation were given a serum that was executed from use when the Factions were still being created. They cancelled Abnegation's initiation yesterday," Calla reported.
"Well, that's grand," I responded. "How did they get a hold of it, if the serum isn't available to anyone?"
"I heard that no one in the Factions, not even the Erudite, have even a small bit of the serum," Grant replied. "Someone told me that they were taken to an Erudite lab. But that's only what I've heard."
I took a bite of my peanut butter sandwich. "Well, it's safe to assume that this might be an issue between every Faction, not just Erudite or Abnegation. Right?" Grant merely shrugged his shoulders.
"What if they had outside help?" Calla asked. Grant and I raised our eyebrows in curiosity. "What if those people were brainwashed or something on the other side of the fence?"
"There was barely anyone left after the war, Calla," I replied. "That's why we built the Factions."
"How do you know for sure?" Calla snapped. "Have you gone out there?"
"What do you mean, 'gone out there'?" Grant asks. "Has anyone been outside the fence?"
"Yes!" Calla exclaims. "Do either of you know anyone that's left the Factions?"
It was silent for a few moments. "I mean," I stumbled. "Yes. Maybe. I'm not positive. I don't know everything."
"True," Grant says. He took a bite of his sandwich and snapped, as if having a sudden idea. "Kirsten."
I instinctively look down. "Kirsten? What about her?"
"I'll bet she went out there, at least once or twice," Grant responded.
"I think I remember her saying that in her note," I responded in a cross between a mutter and a whisper.
"What?" Grant turned towards me, staring. "Did you say you have a note?"
I pull a note from my jacket pocket that I've carried since a year ago. I quickly hand it to Grant and Calla to read:
I totally get that you don't want to meet me. I get it, it's totally up to you, and it's okay. There were just some things that I would like for you to know and keep secret until the time comes. Who knows, it may be useful in the future.
There are people outside the walls. They are the Bureau, do not trust them. They will destroy the city and the faction system. Their original goal was to deplete crime rates, and they'll only cause more if you try and deplete them yourselves. Dauntless, I'm afraid to say, is not strong enough to fight the Bureau and the rest of the American Republic by itself.
Stay out, Laryn. I don't want you to die at the hands of the Bureau as I have.
Kirsten
