I woke up to the sound of Eddie's voice. He grunted as he repositioned his arm in his sleep. As my eyes adjusted to the light, I noticed that he had taken his jacket off. It laid on the floor along with his shoes. He had gotten under the sheets and rested on his back. His hair was messy around his neck, and I realized that his bangs were getting long. He looked so peaceful with his dark eyelashes resting on his cheeks. His breathing was deep, raising and dropping his chest at an even pace. I wanted to stay like this forever.
I turned on my side and, with the help of my forearm, I rose to see the clock on the nightstand. 9:47. The movement on the mattress caused the resting boy to wake up. His eyes opened slowly, and he looked around, trying to recall where he was. Then, his eyes landed on mine and a soft downwards smile crossed his lips.
"Hi." He whispered.
"Hi."
He rubbed his eyes like a child and turned on his side to face me. "I didn't snore much, did I?"
"No... But you do drool in your sleep." I mocked him.
"Do I? Well, at least I don't talk in my sleep like someone I know."
"Oh my god. What did I say?"
"Nothing important, only that you wanted me so bad." He teased back. "No but really, you said something about... a Winston Smith?"
"I was dreaming about this book I've been reading."
"Yeah, sure. How convenient." A hint of jealousy tinted his voice.
"I swear! It's 1984, a classic by George Orwell. Winston is the main character. And-" I saw a mischievous smile drawn on him. I was giving him exactly the reaction he wanted. I frowned at him. "You're an idiot, Munson."
I sat up in bed and, realizing the situation, my stomach dropped. "Mrs. Henderson... Eddie, I wish this could go on for longer, but you need to leave."
"Wait, are you sure she's even home?"
"What?"
"Well, earlier the sound of the front door woke me up. I checked on you and well... I got curious and momentarily left the room."
"You did what?!"
"Don't be mad at me, Sweetheart. I just wanted to know if I could stay a little longer. When I checked, Mrs. Henderson wasn't there. I even saw a note on the kitchen table, which I didn't read because... privacy."
"Shit. You're insane." I stood up from bed and opened the door just enough for me to see that there was no one nearby. I crossed the doorframe and whispered as I closed the door. "Be quiet. I'll be right back."
My feet moved swiftly across the wooded floor. I tried to make as little noise as possible while I checked the whole house for signs of life. Fortunately, Mrs. Henderson wasn't back yet. Neither was Dustin. I stepped into the kitchen and spotted the mentioned note. It read:
'Y/N,
I went out to spend the day with Laura. I didn't want to wake you up because you've been looking so tired the last couple of days. I'll be back by dinner time. Please have breakfast and wait for Dustin to arrive before and if you are to leave the house.
- Claudia.'
With this in mind, I went back to my room and opened the door, only to find Eddie looking through my stuff curiously. Apparently, he had found my collection of silly socks. He seemed amused by it.
