Wednesday couldn't end fast enough for Jen. Her bike had gotten a flat tire a block from school, after walking the rest of the way she was nearly a half hour late for her first class. The rest of the day did not improve. Spaghetti sauce on her shirt and a late paper in English class were the highlights and by the last bell, Jen felt she had been hit by a train.
Unlocking her tragic bike, Jen sighed at the prospect of walking home, when Hudson strolled up. She had done her best to avoid him for the past two days, and now pretended to be busy with her bike helmet.
"See you tomorrow?"
"Huh? Oh yeah." She mumbled clipping on her helmet.
"The math test is going to be brutal."
"Math test!?" Jen exclaimed, "what math test!?"
Hudson smirked, "the one tomorrow. You've been studying for it, right?"
"Ohhh no...." a sinking feeling settled in her stomach when his words stirred a vague memory of their math teacher warning them to study.
"I'll be... doing a last cram study tonight... if you wanted to come over." He offered hesitantly.
"YES! I bet your good at math!" Jen exclaimed, "when should I come!?"
Hudson took a deep breath, "Uh, lets say 7:30? You remember my address?"
"Why would I?"
Hudson stared back at her.
"Right!" she exclaimed, "Because I was there at your party, that was at your house!"
"Yep."
Jen laughed, hoping it would ease his discomfort, "Yeah, that was a party all right- where we totally didn't 'hook up'." she used air quotes and laughed at the thought.
"So... you're good with the address?"
"No, I've got a horrible memory." She said flatly.
With another big breath, Hudson gave his address, Jen texted it to herself, gave him a thumbs up and then lead her bike away.
It was on her way home when Chrissy texted her.
U free tonight?
Jen responded quickly, saying she was busy. She smiled to herself, pleased that she was turning down hanging out with friends so she could study.
"I'm so responsible!" she crooned. Her good mood continued through the rest of her day and Hudson's front doorstep found her with a smile.
"Hi." A girl with golden hair and perfect skin answered the door. She looked Jen up and down, "Hudson's in the living room."
"Thanks!" Jen squeezed past her and manhandled her binder out of her backpack. The living room was empty.
"Hey." Hudson greeted from behind her.
He leaned against the kitchen doorway, a bowl of popcorn in his hand, "if the clouds clear up, we should be able to see mars tonight."
"Huh. Anyways, what should we be studying?" Jen sat down and spread out her things, "Something about quadratic equations?"
Hudson hesitated a moment, "right." He said with a constrained sigh and sat down beside her, "Yeah, we should be comfortable with the three types of quadratic equations for the test." He pulled out a sheet with so many numbers and letters it made Jen's head spin, but she was determined to get a good grade on the test, so she took a deep breath and listened carefully.
They worked steadily for an hour, the seemingly endless march of letters, numbers and brackets turning Jen's brain into mush.
"Ok, we should stop now." Hudson announced when Jen yawned for the fiftieth time.
"Alright, thanks man. I have a good feeling about the test now!" she stood up and stretched, her hello kitty eraser falling from her lap.
Hudson leaned back and rubbed his eyes.
Jen grabbed a handful of cold popcorn and crammed it into her mouth, "You know, you've got a nice place!"
"Thanks." Hudson mumbled with a tight smile.
Jen took a long-satisfied breath, pleased things were going so well, "Well, see ya!" she waved and headed for the front door.
As she stepped outside, she laughed softly to herself, "Yeah there's no way they hooked up!"
"He likes you." The girl with the blond hair said, apparently she had been waiting.
Jen jumped and clutched at her heart, "OH my great aunt's ulcer!"
The girl raised a single judgmental brow.
Jen squinted at her "who are you?"
"Hudson's sister, we met at the party."
"Oh right, that." Jen started down the front steps, "I didn't recognize you without... a party hat."
The girl stared at Jen with a look of disgusted disbelief, "what are you doing?"
"Um, going home."
"Are you using my little brother to get good grades?"
"What? No!"
"I hope not, because he really likes you."
"Ok." Jen shrugged, wishing she could escape.
"So don't break his heart!"
"I said Ok!" Jen defended, growing annoyed. She walked home grumbling to herself the whole way.
Was this too heavy on dialog?
