"No way, how is that even possible?"

"It was a simple method to go away when I was a teenager. I knew if I went to the beach my parents wouldn't find me there because they never went. The most terrifying thing in the world to me, however, is the thought of all the uncharted territory underwater. Most people mention the sense of peace they have while swimming. It gives me a burst of adrenaline. For instance, will today be the day when I surf right into a shark's mouth? Or will it be the day that I will be swept away by a rip current? I know it seems morbid, but I've always been fascinated by life's darker aspects.

"Wow. I find that to be somewhat fantastic. Every time you venture outside, it's like facing your anxieties."

"I guess. So what's something no one knows about you?"

"You'll laugh, I promise. I once ended a relationship with a man because he couldn't properly assemble a peanut butter and jelly sandwich."

"I didn't think there was. wrong way."

"Well, there is, there are a bazillion wrong ways and only one right way."

"You are one tough girl. You saw him do it wrong and just said see ya later?"

"Yeah. I mean, everyone knows there is supposed to be more peanut butter than jelly. He basically gave me a jelly sandwich, gross."

"What type of jelly?"

"Peach Jelly, can you believe it? Everyone knows Grape is better. No relationship would last if your partner can't make a simple midnight PB and J."

They sat in peaceful tranquility for a moment until Daniel laughed, warming their hearts.

"I feel bad for keeping you."

"Don't I actually want to keep talking to you. Is that weird?"

"No weirder than me call you late at night."

"Exactly why now? We've been messaging all week, after all. Why did you decide you wanted to talk this evening?"

"I'm not sure. It was definitely a bad day, but you always make me grin. I wanted to call when I had a moment to myself after finally leaving the crowds, but I was cut off. I didn't have a chance till today."

"Really, you haven't mentioned anything about this visit. How are you doing? Is it fun or work?

"I'm in Texas. Not at all enjoyable or work. It's..."

"Complex."

"Definitely."

"It's alright. We hardly really know one another, therefore I don't expect you to spill all your secrets to me right now."

"I like you, Maria. You're a good person."

"I think you're a good person as well."

Maria woke up the following morning with her phone next to her ear and no memory of when they had ended their call

Maria woke up the following morning with her phone next to her ear and no memory of when they had ended their call. Since it was dead, she plugged it in and went to clean up in the bathroom. She discovered coffee after taking a shower and discovered that Daniel had left her a few unread text messages.

Daniel: I believe I got sleepy and lost you. I appreciate you staying up with me. I liked learning about your tastes for jelly.

When Maria read it, she chuckled. More than simply her favorite jelly had been revealed to him. They discussed a wide range of topics, including their favorite movies and awkward college experiences. She might find herself falling for the man who was only meant to be an escort to her brother's wedding if she wasn't careful. She still hadn't formally invited him to join her at the wedding. She went to respond while feeling bold.

Maria: I apologize. I get drowsy from having too much fun. I enjoyed our conversation, but I will continue to argue that Boyz in the Hood is a superior film to Paid in Full.

Daniel: Not a chance

Maria: We'll just have to agree to disagree. Lol

Daniel: We will

Maria: Hey, strange question: Do you recall when I mentioned my brother's wedding? Would it be strange if I invited you?

The three tiny dots that indicated he was typing slowly vanished and then reappeared as Maria looked. They finally vanished after about a minute, which made her heart stop. Had she already made a mistake here?

Had she already made a mistake here?
