"I still find it hard to comprehend that Dad let me stay with you. This site is incredible!" As Jessica moved through Maria's teeny one-bedroom apartment, she exclaimed. Since they had been back in town for about a week, Jessica had been gushing about new things every time Maria turned around, which only served to emphasize how urgently Maria needed to give her home a thorough spring cleaning.
"I wouldn't call it incredible. In New York, you could cram three of my apartments into your bedroom alone."
"Well, space isn't really what it's made out to be. Style is important, and Auntie, you have style," she laughed
"You may say that now, but after sleeping on my uncomfortable, used couch for a few more days, you will beg to go home."
"No way. Dad said that if I want to, I can remain here for the summer. I have no plans to return home any time soon because of your home and Uncle Matthew's. My goal is to get a tan and meet a guy. "
"What? While you are down here, you won't be dating. Definitely not."
"What else am I going to do while you and Daniel are fighting, you ask?"
"Little girl, I previously advised you not to get your hopes up. Daniel and I have finished."
"Yet why? Even though he made mistakes, you still adore him, don't you?"
"It's challenging to be smitten with someone you've only recently started dating. Especially if you realize that he is a serial liar."
"But he just did it because telling you worried him. That must have some significance, right? It's not like he was cheating on her while genuinely engaged to her."
"No, but what's the distinction between lying about who you are and cheating?"
"But did he really lie, or did he just withhold certain information from you?"
"It's irrelevant. Everything is equivalent."
"I don't believe that. Adults, in my opinion, frequently make matters much more difficult than they need to be. You two can make it work if Daniel thinks the same way about you as you do about him. Simply overcome your differences and take a chance."
"I have no idea what he thinks of me. He has not contacted me."
"No, really?"
"No, not a text or email, nothing."
"Then, maybe you should give him a call. Don't you want to see him?"
"It isn't relevant anymore."
"Maria, you know that happiness exists? So perhaps you should seek out your own?
She embraced her niece and remarked, "Sound wisdom from an eighteen-year-old. You are wise beyond your years, little lady."
Maria responded to the knock on her door by assuming it was Sara.
When she went to open it, her best friend was there for her with a wrapped-up box.
"You brought a gift for me?"
"No, that was on your mat," Sara said.
Maria grabbed it from her and placed it on the counter before entering the kitchen.
"Open it up!" Jessica and Sara followed her as Jessica yelled with delight.
Maria laughed a little when she opened the box. She brought out a loaf of bread, some grape jelly, and peanut butter, and tears welled in her eyes. A brief note was located at the box's base.
