"Who's this?" Jake eyed up the boy standing next to Stacey as they got out of the car at pier. I had been drafted in as the Uber and was more than ready to return home for a film and pizza with my mom.
"This is Carlos, I invited him so Micaya could join us" Stacey explained.
I frowned at Stacey.
"It was Sammy's idea" she deflected. Sammy gave me a weak smile. I looked down at my outfit - a blue jumpsuit, cardigan and crocs. Nice. Sammy and Stacey had full glam and I wasn't even sure if I'd put deodorant on this morning.
"He's come all this way Micaya" Sammy pleaded.
I groaned. "Okay, let me park the car".
Stacey squealed. "I'll get us a table!" and she rushed into the nearest restaurant, pulling Jake behind her.
Carlos was Dominican and we got on like a house on fire, sharing jokes and fries.
"Do you want to share a milkshake?" He asked.
"No, she's lactose intolerant" Abe interrupted.
I shot him a look. Since when does he care?
"But you are, remember when-" he carried on
I cut him off "don't start!". I knew he was about to dredge up some age old story about how I got diarrhoea in a public place.
Stacey thought bowling was a good idea, so thats what we did next. I am good at many things but bowling isn't one of them. Carlos tried and failed to help me.
"Come on Miccie!" Abe said, exasperated. "Look".
He placed his hand over mine and held it there, helping me guide the ball in the right direction.
"Ready?" He asked. I could feel his breath on my neck, my heart pounding and my hand getting clammier.
I nodded and together we released the ball. For brief moment it felt like there was no one else in the room, just Abe and me. I could feel his every part of his body against mine. His hand, the cotton of his t-shirt pressing against my tricep. The noise of the strike shook me out of the trance.
"Yes Miccie!" Abe exclaimed, high fiving me before going back to sit with Sammy.
"Are you two exes or something?" Carlos asked as we walked out to the car.
"Who?" I answered, confused.
"You and Abraham"
I started to laugh.
"Why's that funny?" Carlos shifted uncomfortably.
"Because he's constantly reminding me and everyone within earshot that I'm like his sister, how did you miss that?"
"That explains how he knows your entire medical history" Carlos started to smile and I nodded in agreement.
"Yeah, we're like family" I reassured him.
"Good. I had a really fun time tonight" he took my hand carefully in his as we walked towards the car.
"Me too" I replied, trying not to blush.
"Do you fancy coming to the beach with me tomorrow? We could have a picnic?" He suggested.
"I'd love that" I beamed at him and gave him a big hug.
