The first thing he heard after waking up was a splattering sound and Vanessa cursing. Gregory might have actually been awake for a while, but when you're comfortable in a bed under a warm blanket, the line between awake and asleep gets blurred.
Gregory sat up and rubbed his eyes, slowly realizing two things. The first being that this was very much not a guest room, the second being that it was dark outside, almost certainly night time.
Walking into the kitchen, he was able to witness the tail end of whatever clean up Vanessa had been doing. Seeing her in hello kitty pajamas was extremely weird.
"Good you're awake! Careful not to step on the towel, I used it to clean up an egg I dropped. Glad to see our sleep cycles are equally messed up."
"What time is it?"
"It's four thirty-ish in the morning. I'm making eggs, but I have cereal if you want that instead." Gregory shook his head, "Eggs are fine." He couldn't remember the last time he had eggs.
"Great" Vanessa went back to pushing the liquid eggs around with a spatula. It looked pointless, but he never learned to cook so what does he know. He sat down on the small couch and was finally able to take a good look at the apartment. The combined living and kitchen space was...small. There wasn't even a dining table. The couch was sat across from a standing flatscreen TV and surrounded by empty walls. There were a few photos that were too far away for him to see clearly, but the apartment couldn't have looked more lonely.
"Breakfast is served!" Vanessa brought over two plates of eggs and a salt shaker.
She sprinkled a generous heap on her eggs before handing the shaker to Gregory. He put a bit on before devouring the plate of eggs. They were delicious. Whatever stirring nonsense Vanessa had done with the spatula was well worth it. The TV was turned on, displaying a news channel talking about the stock market or something. The volume was low and Gregory didn't care enough to pay attention.
"I'm sorry"
"Huh?" Gregory looked up from his plate. Vanessa was pushing around the last bit of her eggs.
"I never actually said sorry. There was a lot going on but that's not an excuse. I'm so, so sorry Gregory." He wasn't used to adults apologizing. All of his instincts screamed at him not to trust this, another plot to gain his trust only to betray him. But the sorrow in her eyes was something new.
"It's okay, you're...forgiven." God it had been a while since he said that, did he do it right?
"It's really not, but thanks. I probably owe you an explanation of what really happened."
"You were like, mind controlled right?"
"How did you know that?"
"It's like in the one movie with the robots and the evil queen? She's bad, but then she's good and sorry because the real bad guy was making her. When you talked about 'him' in the car it sounded a lot like that."
"You're more observant than I gave you credit for, kid. That's basically what happened. I beta tested a game, this...this guy named William Afton- it was weird. In the beginning it was just doing favors and I wanted to help, but then it got weirder and weirder. Making a bunny costume and getting really high quality, sharp knives. Then, he told me to kill someone. I didn't want to, but he got control of me. I think it had something to do with those little things I did for him, I don't know. What I do know is that whatever you did in the Pizzaplex saved me. You got rid of him," she gives Gregory the brightest smile he's ever seen on someone so tired. A song started playing and Vanessa grabbed her phone from the kitchen island.
"Hey? Yeah I'm up. Of course I remember when I'm supposed to be there. Uh huh. Yup. See you in a bit Sam." She put the phone down and picked up the egg towel. "Alright Gregory, I've gotta head in." Grabbing a pile of clothing from the arm of the couch, she disappeared into what was probably the bathroom.
