Chapter 1: He's Back
The six of them sat in the back of a large black holding van, a HYDRA Agent dressed in all black, including black mirrored security helmets with a large protective frame covering their faces. Nobody spoke, too lost in thought, or pain.
Brooklyn glanced at Steve from where she was sitting in the corner, her cuffed hands crossed in front of her. Her hands had been disconnected from each other, and instead attached to the opposite shoulder, crossed over her chest like an 'X', making it difficult to breathe deeply, resulting in shallow breaths. Her arms ached from her attacks on the concrete floors when blocking bullets, and the forced position of them increased her discomfort.
Nathan sat next a paling Natasha, his face anxious as he watched her bullet wound dribble blood. Connor sulked across him, at his wings being taken away, Sam giving Natasha concerned looks.
If Brooklyn's hands were free she could try to cool down the area, slow the blood flow to it to decrease the bleeding. However she could do nothing but watch Natasha's face, noting the subtle expressions of pain she was trying hard to hide.
"It was him," Steve spoke into the silence, his head bowed and his own arms barricaded against his chest, "He looked right at me...like he didn't even know me."
Steve had been the quietest, least reactive of the six since he'd breathed the name of his supposed dead best friend on the bridge. Brooklyn had been quietly worrying about his lack of reaction, unsure if it was representative of his shock, or a calm before the storm.
"How's that even possible?" Sam shook his head, fixing Steve with assessing eyes, "It was like seventy years ago."
"Zola." Steve said the name with as much hatred as an emotionless human could say. Brooklyn's knowledge of the scientist was limited, but her opinion was growing by the minute, "Bucky's whole unit was captured in '43, Zola experimented on him. Whatever he did helped Bucky survive the fall. They must have found him and..."
"None of that's your fault, Steve." Natasha rasped, swallowing to soothe her dry throat from screaming at her kids to move from the bullets she had taken. Her body swayed from the rough movements of the van, the movement only sending smaller stings of pain shooting across her chest.
"Even when I had nothing, I had Bucky." Steve said to nobody but himself. Brooklyn's eyes stung. She knew the feeling, knew she would be feeling the same if it was Nathan.
Natasha winced, resting her head back against the cool metal of the van wall. Nathan shifted in his seat, his eyes trained on the leaking wound. He looked at Sam, his voice strained.
"We need to get a doctor." He said to Sam, who turned at the two stoically sitting guards.
"We don't put pressure on that wound she's gonna bleed out here in the truck-"
Sam flinched back as one of the guards closest to him pulled out an electrified rod, holding it threateningly towards him. However, instead of hurting Sam, the masked guard twirled it in their hand, ramming it into the chest of the guard sitting next to them.
"Oh shit!" Connor exclaimed from where he had been sulking, and everyone in the van tensed. The guard lifted their leg and kicked the other guard across the head, sending the man sprawling to the floor, knocked out.
Pulling their helmet off, Brooklyn inhaled as Maria Hill sat there, looking stuffy as she grimaced at the helmet.
"Damn, that thing was squeezing my brain," Maria huffed, blowing her hair out of her eyes. She took a double take at Sam and Connor, raising an eyebrow, before turning to a taken aback Steve "Who are these guys?"
