Not ten steps into the second half of the bridge to Piltover, huge beams of light were shot towards our faces, illuminating a small troop of enforcers.
"What the hells is this?!"
"Sir!" Caitlyn called out, and I squinted my eyes to try and see the face of the person she was speaking to as she held up her badge, "I have proof! Silco's behind everything!"
The leader of the troop, I assumed, told the others to lower their arms, and then slowly walked towards us. He asked us to show him. The closer he got, as my blade burned on my leg, his features became clearer.
Ekko hesitated, but he trusted Vi's judgement and listened to Caitlyn, showing the man the Arcane gemstone in the safehold container. The man stopped, took one breath, and just as I started to recognized him, he pulled out his hand gun and fired. The bullet flew past me and Ekko fell into his back from the force.
"Ekko!" I screeched, dropping to the ground beside him as the captain turned to Caitlyn.
I looked him over frantically, reaching in my pocket for a cloth, something to press on the wound. Maybe I could save him. Maybe if my grandmother was right, and I was born with a connection to the Arcane and could use magic, I could figure out how to heal him.But the bullet didn't go through him, it was stopped by a board he'd put under his shirt.
I huffed a quiet breath of relief. He must have started wearing a vest after what happened to Petra.I snapped my head back up to the Sheriff, eyes blazing as I remembered what I saw.
It mattered not if I had an affinity for the Arcane or not, because even without it, I was extremely powerful. I trained hours everyday, punching the air, screaming at the stars, kicking trees. And every minute, every second my head pulsed with anger I thought of the blood on the pavement of my home and that mans face.
The way his voice cried out, "This wasn't part of the deal!"
I'd never forget the way he said that, I'd never forget his face, no matter how hard I tried.
"I told you, to stay out of it." He sighed, not noticing I wasn't crying over Ekko as his hands shook.
What a coward.
I pulled out my crossbow and shot him in the arm. His gun dropped to the bridge floor as he screamed and I stood up straight, clipping the weapon back to my waist before grabbing the hilt of my sword.
"You made that deal with Silco!" I growled, "You got the Sheriff before you killed!"
He was stumbling, shaking, and the blame shocked him into some kind of childish state.
"No-no that wasn't—I never wanted that to happen!" He barked back.
He deservedly reached for another weapon, so I unsheathed my blade and swung it outwards, cutting his hand.
"You took everything from me!" I hissed.
"I don't even know you!"
"Well then take a good look!"
I kicked off the ground and spun, raising my leg and slamming the back of my foot into the side of his head, sending him stumbling. I flipped the sword in my hand and smashed the end of the hilt on the other side of his head before he could recuperate. Shoving my hand out, I knocked him right in the throat. He bent over, choking.
"Wait—please! Alula, don't do this!" Caitlyn cried.
"You took the woman I loved from me." I said, ignoring her, "So you better remember me, to whatever hell you go to. We are the Undercity, and we will no longer be your scapegoat!"
