Scene 8

Vi followed me silently through the back alleys of the topside, and through my head as we walked, I repeated the conversation she had with Caitlyn in my head. Over and over again, oil and water.

Oil and water.

What does that make me, then? Vinegar?

"Here." I said, looking up without looking back at her.

I'd brought us to the hidden entrance of the biggest smith fire house in this entire corner of the world. Not even the undercity had anything as massive as this, and the weapons production organizations down there were much more in use than any on topside.

"I hope you know what you're going to say."

"What, you don't trust me?" She asked, but despite the teasing tone, my shoulders froze.

Trust you? I...

I turned back to look at her from the corner of my eye. Her eyes were sunken. She was probably thinking about her fight with Caitlyn this entire time too, following me blindly. She trusted me, but she still thought of me as the same girl I was back then. She didn't know I loved her, and she never would.

"I do." I replied, turning back to pick the lock of the door.

But, only to a certain extent. An extent that cuts off when Powder became Jinx, and the loathing I feel for you right now, knowing I'm not even your second choice, makes it hard to say something as intimate as 'I trust you'.

The door opened and she walked in first, hands fisted in the pockets of her jacket and eyes scanning the halls carefully. We followed the small, glowing light of the fire and the sound of metal on metal down to a lower level.

Jayce just stood there, looking at something, alone in the dim lighting. It almost looked like if we left him alone for a little longer, he'd break out in a monologue while shedding silent tears, looking at his reflection in his polished weapons.

He turned at Vi's heavy footsteps.

"You wanna make Silco pay for what he's done?"

Jayce scowled, "I could have you arrested."

I went to retort with a nasty remark, but Vi cut me off, "You guys really like to bandy that threat around. You ever been to Still Water?"

"No."

"So you just... wave an arm, have someone dragged off, don't bother to think about what it does to someone—being stuffed in a stone box for weeks or months or even years?"

Jayce looked to the floor, pressed his lips together, and then spoke gently, "Yeah, I wanna make Silco pay."

"I want in."

He rolled his eyes, "There is no in. You heard the council."

"Fuck the council. You said you were tired of doing nothing, that's the only sensible thing that came out of anyone's mouth tonight."

"I'm not a vigilante."

"No, you're a victim." Vi replied.
