Mike smiled and closed his eyes as he squeezed Will, sinking in their ecstatic hug.
Will forgave me. Will accepted my apology.
Will let go. Still merely a few inches away from Mike's face. "Thanks for stopping by, even though you're probably going to get sick."
Mike let out a small chuckle, "It was totally worth it." His smile so wide it hurt his cheeks. "Thanks for accepting my not-so-good apology."
Will returned the smile, but in a soft, Will way. "I think the apology was pretty decent. I mean I would do it better than you, of course, but it was good." He teased, his smile turning into a slight smirk.
"Thank you, Byers. You really have such a great way with words, you know that?" Mike quickly hopped on with the sarcastic teasing.
Will's eyes were glittering, his hair messy. His expression stayed the same, a smirk plastered on his face. Mike sighed, "No but really, thanks for everything. The clothes, the hot chocolate, for forgiving me, even letting me in your house."
"You're welcome, Mike." The name escaping Will's mouth made Mike feel like he just dropped down on a rollercoaster.
"I better get going! I'm glad we're on good terms again." Mike said picking up his bike and getting ready to ride off, the heavy rain hitting his head like nails. Will nodded slightly and exhaled whilst whispering, "Yeah." Both boys smiled at each other, and Mike was gone.
*
The front door creaked open; Mike flinched at the noise.
Why is everything so unnecessarily loud in the night?
Quietly closing the door, he tiptoed to his room and jumped onto his bed after trying to close this door as quietly as possible. Mike was happy; he apologized to Will and Will forgave him.
Also, they shared a kind of intimate hug on the porch which made Mike's body heat up. Knowing that his friend still cared about him and that he obviously did too, thinking about how he got excited whenever Will did something completely normal, he smiled.
This was a real friendship. The nervousness and excitement he felt around his friend was a sign of friendship. True friendship.
Mike was staring at his ceiling, overwhelmed; he couldn't keep his mind off of Will. Even when he tried to think about something else, like him being dumped by El, his mind always kept wandering back to Will. Two specific moments replaying over and over again.
How Mike had closed his eyes for a second and then he heard a voice, Will's voice, speak his name, "Mike." How when he opened his eyes he was met by Will's gaze and soft smile. How he got, not wanting to admit it, mesmerized by the beautiful almond eyes staring at him. How he felt a shiver go down his spine.
How the only thing he could say was 'I'm sorry'. How Will was still looking him, right in the eyes and once again whispered his name, "Mike..." How Will gently grabbed his shoulders and pulled him into a hug.
Or how when Will called Mike's name when they were on the porch and staring at the other for God knows how long. How Will glanced at Mike's lips... no. That was just Mike imagining stuff, why the hell would Will look at his lips? For a second it seemed like they were about to kiss.
When Mike thought about it, he realized that wouldn't be such a bad thing.
Maybe you like Will?
"Bullshit!" he said to himself, "Stop. Whoever you are and whatever you're doing in my head, stop it. That's total, complete BULLshit!"
Oh but Michael, you know who I am. I'm you. I am your higher consciousness.
