The next day arrived, and Mike was angry, he tried to give Will his space, but he dodged him, he even confirmed Will was still okay with practice so at this point Will was just lying to him.
Mike waited until the lunch bell rang, grabbed Will's hand, and led him into the av room. Where will began promptly panicking "What are we doing in here?" mike sat on the floor, the same place he was on the night of the Snow Ball, and looked at his friend, concerned, "You said you were okay with practice, were you lying?" Will sat down next to him, trying to be convincing. "No, really I'm fine." mike could see that will was obviously willing to play this game forever, but he was already fed up with it. "Fine then let's practice." Will glanced at him in surprise. "R-right now?" "Yeah, right now." mike watched Will try to think of some excuse, but before he could, mike kissed him, but this time Will didn't react or close his eyes. They both stared at each other, this would be enjoyable if Will wasn't having a mini heart attack right now. Will pulled away, normally a light blush would appear, but he was beet red.
The kiss wasn't so bad, but it was disappointing, so much so that mike couldn't keep his disappointment off of his face. Will's blush faded somewhat, and he thought about how he did the right thing, probably. But...mike was upset? like genuinely disappointed? This is what Will intended, but that isn't the point. Mike expected something. And if he really did think of this as practice, then, why was he so upset? "Mike...what's wrong?" Mike looked up at him as if he was unsure how to respond. When his eyes widened slightly, signaling the realization that he'd been enjoying the kisses. They both knew will wasn't good with words, and this was a moment where words were crucial, but something was different, Will knew mike was feeling the same way will felt a year ago, confused and a little scared at the possibility of liking one another. Will didn't know what to do, but leaving would definitely make mike feel more uncomfortable than he already was. So hesitantly, he grabbed Mike's hand, and mike looked up at him. Will expected him to quickly pull away his hand, but he didn't, he seemed to be looking for some confirmation in him. When he discovered telepathy wasn't a thing yet, he started to speak when they heard footsteps coming toward them. Mike grabbed a random radio, trying to look busy when max burst in, the two boys standing and admiring the radio. "Idiots! You missed fourth period, and everyone lost their shit." "Why?" mike tilted his head in confusion. "They thought Will was having another episode, genius." will let go of Mike's hand to drag max to explain the situation. Mike followed. as the chilly air replaced Will's warm hand, he forced himself to ignore the nagging sadness that came with it.
They were all back at Wills house. Jonathan, Nancy Steve and Eddie were already planning to hang out at Nancy's house upstairs and mike had already settled for the less complicated explanation that will had held his hand in a comforting, friendly manner. Sure, he was never told this, but apparently the boys were in silent agreement to pretend like that was normal, heterosexual behavior because Will seemed to be unbothered, maybe even in a good mood, seeing as he was smiling and laughing all day like it was his birthday. He didn't even blink when El ran up and gave him a hug. Mike didn't have time to question his friend, though, because the mission was still to ask El out, or at least make her not mad at me anymore, plus will was happy to help. So, mike stopped the racing thoughts of 'what was that' in his head and started a normal not-irritated conversation with El, it was going well, she wasn't screaming or glaring at him, and they were just talking about random stuff. He began to ease into the conversation, just talking and having fun with her for a while, when the doorbell rang.
Everyone was already here, so it was a surprise to hear Will get up and check it out. He soon walked back in with his friend, mason, and mike couldn't help but notice how clingy he was to him, he had his hand around his shoulder, and they were talking almost in sync. "So, this is my friend Mason." A buzz of 'Hey's and 'Hi's greeted him, and Mike saw Will and mason talk and laugh comfortably, and lately, Will hadn't been that comfortable with him. El must've noticed his staring because she looked confused, "Mike," "oh, uh yeah?" he snapped his gaze back onto her. "What's wrong?" He put his hands in his pockets in a non-suspicious way, "What do you mean?" "You keep staring at Will." "I wasn't staring at him." then, out of the corner of his eye, he saw Will and mason literally stuffing marshmallows in their mouths. But why did that matter? he was here with El, not just Will. He could have his fun too.
Mike spent half the time genuinely enjoying El's company. And the other half glancing at mason and will interact. Will was casual with him, not awkward or stuttering at all. Maybe even more than with him. And that was just infuriating. How could Will invite everyone just to hang out with mason the whole time? Is this why he was being so distant towards me? Because it was decided I wasn't good enough anymore? Mike's sadness turned into confusion and anger quicker than he realized. Apparently, the moment was far from over as he stood up and grabbed Will's hand, leading him outside. He could hear everyone talking from inside, but he was too irritated to care.
Once Will and mike were outside in front of the house, Will didn't spare any time asking questions. "Mike, what is going on? why are you so irritated?" "I don't know, Will. Maybe it's because you've been avoiding me." Will scoffed in response. "Just because I've been busy doesn't mean it has anything to do with you-" "but it does, Will you keep lying to me and being shady like it isn't a big deal. when it is, why can't you just talk to me?" "Mike, you know it isn't that easy for me." "It isn't easy to be ignored and shoved to the side either!" Will noticed mikes breathing was getting shallow, "Mike, just calm down! Why are you so angry-" "Because. my best friend is, ignoring me and keeps acting like nothing is wrong!" "Mike, are you serious?" mike flashed a look of anger and confusion. "You think because I've been busy and didn't tell you about it, it caused all this anger? This frustration?" Will walked up to him and put his hands on his shoulders. "You just- you need to calm down." "Wha-" "No, mike, seriously, you are about to have a panic attack." mike took a minute to realize how worked up he was. His hands were shaking, and he could barely breathe. He looked up at will, "This is your fault." "How is it my fault?" "Because you're ditching me just for some dude you met a few days ago!"
Will paused for a minute. Mike was still taking deep breaths. it wasn't working, "I thought you needed to have time to talk with el." "That doesn't mean," he breathed in some more, Will now sitting down at the curb with him. "You should just ditch me without an explanation." Mike was still shaking, and Will was probably making it worse. "I know, mike, I'm sorry." He grabbed Mike's hand, now trying to calm him down. It was partially working, but mike still looked sad, so Will leaned in to kiss him. It was an understatement to say mike cooperated, as he leaned in as well. They were both clinging to each other, it could be counted as practice, but mike wasn't satisfied yet. He grabbed wills shoulders to pull him in, letting will gradually place his hands in his hair. They both missed this feeling, the electricity, the heavy breathing, and even how in sync they were, Will knew to pull away before he got too sucked into it. And he did just that, but his eyes were met with mikes again soon after he pulled away. And mike spent those moments thoroughly questioning the lingering feeling on his lips.
Will was still looking at him, When he caught Will shamelessly glancing down at his lips. he wasted no time diving back in, absorbed in the kiss even more. The rush from leaning into Will was getting to him. He actually liked the scent he was sensing from will, a faint smell of soap and something else. Soon he could feel the boy's breathing get heavier. And he involuntarily shifted his weight, he was now pushing down on him, and Will's grip on mike's hair got tighter, snapping mike back to reality. He had just started to make out with his friend out of nowhere, sitting at the edge of the driveway. They were both pretty shocked. That's probably the best word mike could use to describe this feeling. When he finally opened his eyes, he noticed Will, looking horrified, staring across the driveway. He was confused and turned to see what it was. And that feeling was doubled over when they saw Robin.
Frozen in place a few feet away from them, sodas in hand, Robin had a surprised yet frozen look on her face. Will, who was was pale, still under mike, eyes locked with robin in pure fear, started tearing up. Mike who was frozen over Will slowly began to shake again, panic was setting in. Robin walked up to them, trying to look friendly, "S-sorry, guys, I didn't know you were..." mike finally moved; will's eyes now watery with tears. Robin noticed this and sat down next to them. "No, please don't cry," She passed them some sprite sodas, "I'm like you, so please don't cry." Will immediately hugged her, " y-you mean your..." "Yes, I like girls," She glanced up at mike, "O-oh, I'm not, you know, like that." "But I-I don't have a problem with it or anything." "I'm not going to tell anyone, don't worry." she winked. "Will, you are completely normal, don't be scared." he pulled out of the hug, "T-thanks, robin." "Don't worry about it." She sprung up and walked to the house. "Don't let me stop you!" she shouted across the driveway before heading inside. The heat returned to their faces, Will's especially, his hands covered his face, "Ohhh my god." he murmured. Mike smirked and lifted will up. "c'mon we better go back inside." he removed will's hands from his face. "No more avoiding me, okay?" Will was cherry red, "O-okay."
When they finally made it inside, mike spent the night having fun, knowing everything was going to be okay.
