The swarm of bats were circling in the dark sky. You wiped blood from your nose; you must've hurt it in your fall from the gate in the ceiling. You ignored the pain in your ankle while your legs moved as fast as they could. Red lightning lit up the sky every now and then with loud booms in between.
"Eddie!" You yowled as your lungs fought for air. "Eddie?!" All you could hear were the screeching bats as you got closer to the the fluttering flock. It wasn't looking good. You had no idea what you would possibly do, how you would possibly fight them, they were too many; you couldn't. The only thing you could do was to try and get Eddie back to safety. You let out all your frustration in a loud tearing scream.
The bats suddenly all just, dropped. They just dropped to the ground.
You stopped in your tracks and looked at them for a moment in confusion. Until a body caught your eye. Eddie. He was lying on the ground between the mewing bats. You rushed over to him.
"Eddie!" The desperation in your voice was agonizing. "Oh, Eddie.."
He was struggling and choking, didn't react to your appearance.
You dropped to the ground beside him and grabbed his face with your hands. "Oh god, Eddie.."
He avoided eye contact and looked away as you tucked his curly hair away from his bloody face. "Bad, huh?"
"N-No. No no no, you're gonna be okay." You stressed as you cupped his face. "W-We just... you have to go back to the gate, we got to get you to a hospital right away."
"... Okay."
"Alright, j-just.." You made an attempt to grab his arm and help him up, not ready to give up. "Come on, please, Eddie-"
"I just, I think I just need a second, okay?" He murmured painfully.
You sniffled as you settled on the ground again with Eddie's head in your lap.
He looked up at you and gave you a weak but genuine smile. "I didn't run away this time, right?" His puppy eyes were sparkling as they were watering.
"No, no, you didn't run."
"You're gonna have to look after yourself, okay?"
"Stop." No, Eddie was going to have to look after you himself. You bit your lip as you tried to keep yourself from sobbing hysterically. "You're going to graduate, and teach me how to play the guitar-"
"Nah, (Y/N). You're gonna have to take care of yourself, alright? You need to promise me that you're going to be fine."
"I... I'll be fine as long as-"
"Good. Cause I'm actually gonna graduate." Eddie chuckled weakly in your arms. "I think it's my year, (Y/L/N)."
"Eddie..." You couldn't help but sob as you tried to form a sentence. "You're not doing this, you're not.."
"I am so glad I got to know you. I uh, think you're my favorite person ever, heh." Eddie coughed. "I just hate that I didn't meet you earlier. Maybe things would've been different."
You shook your head. "I feel... I feel the same way, Eddie. I like you so much. So, so much. We're gonna-"
"I really like you too, (Y/N)." He cut you off, still staring into your eyes as you blinked away tears to clear your blurry vision. "I wish things would've been different. I think they could've been."
Oh, Eddie. Yeah. Things could've been very different. You wished that the two of you got to know each other earlier. If you just exchanged some words in school, you probably would've liked each other and become friends.. Friends? This wasn't about being friends. Why didn't you tell him that before you entered the Upside Down again? It was all too late now. You were too late. You really wished you would've told him how you felt before. You idiot. This was the end. Wasn't it?
Eddie closed his eyes. "Eddie." His tense body suddenly relaxed in your lap and your arms started to shake. "Eddie? N-no.. Don't do this, don't you dare. I... please don't leave. Eddie?"
No response. You felt your heart sink and your throat thicken.
"Eddie?"
Nothing.
"No, come on, don't..." You couldn't hold back your excruciating sobs any longer. You put two fingers on his neck and leaned forward to hug his limp torso when the ground suddenly started to shake and a powerful electric impulse shot through your body.
You looked up to see the air vibrating and the entire world quaking and remembered everything else that was going on. Four chimes echoed.
