Y/n POV:
~~~
Jeff tightly wrapped the plain white bandages around my arm. My eyes scrunched up and as I gritted My teeth together, the pain running through my body. I could feel my head dizzying as I shook slightly.
"There we go!" Jeff patted my shoulder, startling me as I opened my eyes, "Better?" he asked.
I looked down at the new bandages. They tightly wrapped around my arm, not yet turned red from the thick blood that still pored from it.
I nodded up at him, "Did it all look good?" my voice surprised me, it was quiet and croaky.
I watched as he sat down, eyeing the floor and fiddling with his fingertips, the old bandages still on the table to the right, facing away from me so I couldn't see the blood.
"Jeff?"
I furrowed my eye brows and sat up straighter, scanning his flat face, "Yes, well... when you first got the griever bite, it was less about treating the wound and more about seeing if you were safe and ok as you had passed out." he still stared at the ground, his voice cracking and eyes blinking rapidly, "But in the wound there.... there is a small amount of black goo. It looks similar to the stuff that we see around the maze, on the floor and walls."
I could feel my breathing quicken and heart start to beat quickly. My eyes watered but I didn't know why. I looked back up at Jeff, he was now looking at me, his dark eyes even darker than before, they squinted with sympathy which only made me even more upset and angry, but not angry at him but angry at me.
I stood up, rubbing my eyes and walking to the door, I paused with my hand pressed against the scratching wood of the wall, "I'm going to Alby." My tone was flat but quiet.
Jeff turned around and stood up, taking my bandages and disappeared into a separate room.
I left. Opening the door and slamming it behind me. I ran towards the Homestead. Everyone was moving around the glade, doing there jobs and talking loudly to each other, there laughter ringing around the walls of the glade.
I rubbed my face and marched to the large building in the corner of the maze, multiple floors and a large thick door blocking it out from the rest of the glade. I pushed open the door and walked inside, Alby was sorting through something in the middle of the room as he perched on the edge of a wooden stump.
As the door shut behind me, the light was blocked out, the bright spots around the room coming from the gabs between the wooden walls.
Alby glanced up at me, putting down the item in his hands before shifting to face me. His head tilted to the side and his eyes travelled across my body. "You ok Y/n?" he asked, he pulled a stump towards himself and gestured for me to sit down.
I sighed, taking a deep breath in before I started to speak, "Y-you know when I got bit by the griever?" Alby nodded at me and shifted to lean against his knees, "Well... since then I have been-"
Suddenly I got cut off by the door of the Homestead bursting open. I looked up and saw Brandon, he was one of the older boys in the glade and he worked as a slicer. He had a large amount of blood running over his hands and shirt.
He started to speak, catching his breath in between words, "Jack- he sliced off half his finger." he panted, his palms pressed against his knees.
Both Alby and I's eyes widened and we looked at each other. Alby gave me a sympathetic look and I nodded at him. I watched as Alby stood up and ran out of the homestead with Brandon as a scream was heard from outside. I set off after them, being slightly blinded by the sun shining into my eyes. There was another scream and a group of boys clumped around someone who was sat on the floor. Chuck was at the back, jumping around to see, I moved him back by placing my hand on his shoulder so I could squeeze past him and through the wall of bodies.
On the floor was Jack, his knife to one side of him covered in blood as he rocked back and forth holding onto his hand which seemed to be missing a finger, it hung off his knuckle by a small thread of skin.
My eyes widened and I dashed down to him, kneeling next to Alby and Clint who helped the boy. I pressed my palm to his thigh and took his attention away from the wound, "Breath with me ok. Don't take you eyes off me." he nodded with a large gulp, "In, out, in, out." he breathed with me and slowly seemed to calm down.
From the corner of my eye, I could see Newt and Jeff clearing all the boys away from the scene as Clint and Alby tended to the wound. Jack's eyes squeezed together tightly with each move Clint made, hurting the wound more. I squeezed his leg and kept his attention on me, continuing to whisper to him, "In, out, in, out."
I walked with the small boy to the med hut, keeping him distracted and keeping him calm as Jeff fixed his finger.
After a while, he sat on the edge of his bed staring at the clump of bandages that wrapped around his finger. I lent on the doorframe, my arms crossed over my chest.
"If you keep looking at it, it might disappear." I laughed, moving from my position and walking over to him.
The small boy looked up, his hair flopped in front of his face and I watched as his expression softened and he looked back down. He hummed as I moved closer to him and sat beside him on the bed. The fabric shifted under my weight and I moved the thin box of bandages off to the side, setting it down on the table.
I looked back at the boy, his eyes were glossy and I could see how embarrassed he was, "I know you think your dumb but-"
"You don't know what I'm feeling." Jack snapped. He flicked his head up and stared at me. This made me flinch and I moved my body further away from him and I could feel his warm breath brushing my face, "You have no idea how embarrassed I am."
I looked down at my lap, my fingers fiddling with each other as the feeling in the room changed drastically.
After a few seconds of silence, I spoke up, looking at him again, "Do you remember when I got stuck in the maze?" he looked at me and nodded softly, "And you remember how Minho had to carry my unconscious body back into the glade? Well so does everyone else and you have no idea how embarrassed I am that it happened."
"Really?"
His body shifted and a smile grew on his cheeks, I watched as a wave of comfort washed over him, "Why wouldn't I be."
We shared a smile when the door opened. I looked up and saw Jeff, he had a smile lacing his features and a small roll of bandages in his left hand, "Y/n? Can I check your arm?"
I nodded and stood up, walking after him, giving a little nod to Jack before leaving.
