Chapter 42
Arrival
The buzzing of the bell in the hallway of the hospital caused me to leave my food on the table immediately again for the ninth time. That buzzing signal tells me there was a mass incident casualty at lahat ng sugatan ay papunta na rito sa hospital.
I ran as fast as I could and of course, Doc Marquez, my senior, was already in the lobby. He was eyeing me darkly with his hand on his waist. The other doctors headed to the emergency doors. Pero dahil nga maraming pasyente at paparating we have to scatter to accommodate patients better.
"Sorry, I'm late Doc." I apologized while catching my breath.
"Have you eaten?" tanong niya.
Umiling ako. "I haven't yet."
"We still have a job to do. Just eat later."
Everyone is on alert. It's going to be messy.
Not a second after the siren of the ambulance gave me an alert feeling. Back then, during my first time halos hindi ako makagalaw sa kinatatayuan ko sa unang alarma na narinig ko. But now, it feels more like a reflex.
And this indicates a long night.
I'm reeking with the smell of blood. My coat, and scrub robes ganoon rin. Sa tingin ko ay hindi ako makakauwi. I climbed to the rooftop for a short break to see the city's lights to calm my nerves down.
I took out my phone from my pocket and dialed Sergio's number. This is going to be a night of 2 hours of sleep and back pains through and through.
"No," iling ko kahit hindi niya nakikita. "Hindi ako makakauwi, Sergio. Ang daming gagawin dito sa ospital."
"Nagluto pa naman ako..." he sighed. "Ihatid ko na lang sa'yo? Kumain ka ba diyan? Baka hindi ka na naman kumain. Don't do that often or else, instead of being a doctor baka ikaw ang maging pasyente," he nagged.
I pouted. Sayang. "Hintayin ko yung food na niluto mo."
I ended the call and sighed while drinking coke.
I looked at the lights before me. The wind here on the rooftop embraced me and gave me a chilly and comforting feeling. I wonder what Deo is doing right now. The time right now is 7 pm ang oras siguro doon ay ala-una ng hapon. He's probably working...
I stared at his contact on my phone and sighed.
This time we won't hide it. This time both of our families will know, not just his family or our friends.
Last time, Lian called me reporting that Deo is often at the house bringing food, flowers, and all sorts of things. That kinds of action made Abuela puzzled kasi wala pang sinasabi si Deo kung bakit ang hilig niyang mamigay. Tumitiyempo pa siya kung kailan sasabihin.
