Living Nightmare

Chapter Fourteen

*previous evening*

Tony goes to the lab in the evening, hoping to check on you and Bucky before he goes to bed.

He walks in and immediately notices two things: Bucky's gone, and you're asleep.

"Atta girl" he smiles, knowing that you haven't gotten any rest in days.

He's about to leave again when he sees the laptop and charger on the floor, so he goes to pick it up.

He's placing it down on the table when he hears a noise from the cell.

"No. No, please. Please don't do this again. I can't. Please. Stop it. Stop. No, please. Not again. No."

Tony walks over to the cell and bends down. You kick around a bit in your sleep. Tony sighs as he knows there's nothing he can do. He decides to stay until it stops.

"I don't want to do this" you moan in your sleep. "I dont- no, no, no-"

You suddenly stop moving.

Tony stands back up but doesn't turn before you move again.

You don't say anything, but you sit up straight.

Your head turns as you examine the room you're in.

Then your eyes land on Tony. You slowly tilt your head as you face him.

"Y/n?" Tony asks cautiously. You don't respond. He realises this is probably you sleepwalking again.

You get to your feet.

"Y/n, can you hear me?" Tony wonders. You look at him. He doesn't know what he's planning on saying.

He's silent long enough for you to look away again.

You're looking back around the room.

You look to your feet before looking back at the glass.

You walk over to it until you're standing opposite Tony.

You place both hands on the glass, either side of your head. You lean forward until your forehead is almost touching the glass.

Then you pull back, before throwing yourself forward again.

Tony's eyes widen with shock.

You do it again.

"Shit! Y/n!"

And again.

"Stop!"

You keep banging your head until your head starts bleeding. But even that doesn't stop you.

"Jarvis" Tony calls frantically. "Open the door."

"I'm afraid a passcode is required-"

"Override it! Override the system! Y/n is in danger and you need to open the door! It's an emergency!"

"You would like me to override the security system?"

"Yes! Do it! Open the door!"

"Yes, sir."

The door opens.

Tony runs in and tries to hug you, but you have other ideas. You grab his arm and twist it behind his back. You grab his top and throw him against the window of the cell.

You walk out of it.

Tony gets up and runs after you. He grabs your wrist. You turn and punch him in the face.

"Y/n, stop" Tony gasps. "It's me!"

You ignore what he has to say.

You keep fighting until eventually you kick him back.

He hits the table and it knocks over. Tony falls onto it.

You leave without a second look back.

*present*

"You could override the system this entire time!"

"It's only in case of emergencies" Tony argues back to Bucky. "Jarvis isn't naive."

"So what? You let her leave!"

"I didn't let her. I tried to stop her" Tony gestures at his cuts.

"You didn't try hard enough!"

"Buck, he did his best" Steve defends him. "Don't worry. We're going to find her. She'll show up eventually."

"Don't tell me not to fucking worry! The love of my life is missing! There is a very high chance that she's in danger! Not just to others, but to herself! I need to find her because if something happens I can never forgive myself! I really fucked up and I can't let that be the last thing I said to her!" Bucky shouts, but he's on the verge of tears.

"We are going to find her" Steve repeats.

"How! She could be anywhere!"

"She took the car."

"What?" Bucky looks at Nat.

"Her car's missing" Natasha reiterates. "We can track the licence plate and see where she ended up. We'll find her, Bucky. We're all here to help."

Bucky's quiet; he nods gratefully.

But he leaves the room as he's still worried sick and can't just sit around. He has no idea where to go.

He's walking around the compound until he reaches the living room.

Sam and Bruce are on the couch, paralysed out of shock from what they just witnessed on the TV.

Bucky walks properly into the room so they notice him.

Sam looks up to make eye contact. "Buck, I'm so sorry."

"What?" he frowns. He looks at the TV screen.

"Rewind it" Bruce instructs, and Sam does so.

Bucky listens to what the news channel has to say.

"Good morning, ladies and gentlemen. I am reporting to you, live from upstate New York, specifically a local bodega that took an unfortunate hit just an hour ago. Security footage from the area shows a driver falling asleep at the wheel, causing them to steer off the road and into the front of the store. Luckily, no pedestrians were harmed, but the driver's injuries were much more severe after breaking through the windscreen of the car. The individual has been identified. It is with great sorrow that I must report that it was one of this nation's heroes, the Avenger y/n y/l/n was the one to take this potentially fatal fall. Y/l/n is currently being treated at the New York City hospital. After dedicating her life to help protect this country, we owe it to her to all hope for a quick and easy recovery. That's all for now, next update when we know more."

As soon as the screen changes, Bucky turns and storms out the room.

"Bucky!" Sam calls and runs after him. He follows him through the compound. "What do you think you're doing?"

"What else would I be doing, Sam! I'm going to see her."

"Okay. But wait a minute. Well tell the others and all go together."

"I'm not waiting for shit."

"I can't let you drive when you're this worked up."

They stop walking.

"Fine" Bucky groans. "Hurry up or I'm leaving without you."
