Birds were chirping in the air. The rustling of the leaves coming from the trees created a beautiful melody.
I stared into the eyes of the stone statue situated in the Moscow cemetery. The statue reflected a young Anastasia. At that time of day, she looked serious. Her lips seemed to be drawn down.
It was as if she was staring straight at me. Her expression looked angry. The scar above her eye seemed even more prominent than usual.
I sighed and took a step forward, lowering myself to one knee and placing the dark red rose in my hand on her grave.
There might have been hundreds of flowers that were already lying on her grave. It looked beautiful. She would have liked it.
I stared down at the gravestone. The cursive and squiggly words drilled into my mind. They left a cold shiver that slowly slid down my spine.
In Loving Memory Of
Anastasia Lenkov
Underneath was the date of her birth and the date of her death - three days ago. I swallowed. Raffaele put a hand on my shoulder.
I looked around. The small cemetery was filled with men and women. Black suits clouded my view. Enemies and friends in the same spot in peace.
It felt... strange.
"The plane leaves in about an hour, boss." Thomas said from the other side behind me.
I nodded once, whereupon he stepped back from me. My gaze traveled over the flowers to the headstone next to hers - her mother's headstone. It now had an engraving with her name and dates. Anastasia would have wanted it that way.
The members of the Lenkov mafia are agitated. The grave of their leader is in another cemetery. After his death, the authority passed over to Anastasia. It happened exactly as she explained it to me.
Now they mourn their leader - Anastasia Lenkov, the Russian siren, who for years had given the Bratva the most fearsome reputation.
And now they have no one left from the Lenkov family - there is no one in the next line.
The ambulance came quickly three days ago. They hoisted her onto a stretcher and transported her away and-
"What are we going to do?" - "I don't know." - "We have to find someone."
All these questions behind me made it harder for me to think. How dare they buzz and yap around at a funeral like little insects. My hands balled into fists.
Footsteps approached me.
My gaze diverted to the side and I looked at Iwan's face. He looked utterly exhausted. Anastasia seemed to be like a sister to him. His chest rose and fell, as if he were excited.
