Bumping past what had to be hundreds of students, Cassie guided me to the back table where her friend was patiently waiting.
Cassie: "Finally! That was a lot of people, rush hour never really changes does it?"
A little winded, cassie sighed with a triumphant look on her face, then she sat down and gestured for me to do the same.
Cassie: "Here, sit next to me."
I did as the girl said without blinking an eye but then felt awkward by how obediently I followed her instructions. Cassie giggled at my awkward expression.
Cassie: "Anyway, Noah this is Delilah, Delilah this is Noah."
The confused boy looked at me, then at cassie, then back at me. He seemed a little speechless at first but gathered the courage to say something.
Noah: "H-Hello."
Delilah: "Hi."
We sat there silent staring at Cassie awaiting some form of context. She stared back at us both with a blank expression. Then finally she said,
Cassie: "OH RIGHT!"
Cassie: "Haha my bad, Noah, Delilah is a new student here and I asked her to join us for lunch."
Noah: "Oh I see, well it's nice to meet you, where did you move from?"
The awkward tension was gone now and I felt relieved.
Delilah: "I came from Japan actually, my dad got a better job opportunity here so we had to move."
A look of pure shock came over his face.
Noah: "Wow from out of the country?! That's a big change! Especially from so far away."
Cassie was equally surprised.
Cassie: " I didn't know that! But you speak English so well!"
Delilah: "yeah my dad was born in the U.S so I grew up with both languages. I'd speak Japanese at school and for most of the time at home, but my dad and I would speak to each other in English."
Cassie: "Oh so your mom is Japanese then? It must be a difficult language barrier for her now."
Delilah: "Haha yeah she has a difficult time since she doesn't know much. Me and my dad have been trying to teach her but the process is a bit ... slow."
We all laughed at the thought of my mother attempting to speak English. It's weird, I just met these two but it feels like we've been friends for years. I don't normally connect to people so easily.
Noah: "Well it's interesting to meet someone from that far away, here we see the same faces all the time. It can be a bit boring."
Cassie: "Yeah it's not every day you meet someone new and friendly."
As she said that, Cassie smiled with her pearly white teeth and jokingly punched me in the arm. We laughed and talked for the rest of the lunch period getting to know each other. Being with them felt like a lifetime of happiness. We just clicked, and before we knew it lunchtime was over.
