Chapter 7

Note To Self: To get a woman to not rape you when she sees you, you invite her to a public restaurant. I smiled innocently at Roxanne who scowled right back at me. When she was fiesty like this it was a slight turn on. "Why so angry?" I asked.

"You call me in the huskiest voice you can manage and tell me you are ready for that private meeting and you bring me here?" Her voice was lethal with only a dash of disappointment. "I guess we should just get straight to business then huh?"

  "I'd enjoy that."

"Of course you would," she hissed. She leaned over to the seat next to her and pulled out a folder from the seat next to her. She dropped it onto the table in front of me. "Chale called me and told me about the ball and apparently, these people have been going after celebrities for quite some time. And the company decided to have some of our workers go undercover with their group and in those folders are the people."

I opened the first folder in front of me. Stanley Evans. That's a unattractive name. His face was pale and he looked no larger than 200 hundred punds. "Wait a second, it says whereabouts unknown. You lost the kid?"

"Not exactly, they just suddenly didn't want to work with us anymore and broke off all contact. All of the workers did that and we are unsure as to why. We understand that they have kidnapped most children too. We think they are planning on building an army of sorts. But we still don't know why."

"Is this the part where you tell me I have to go after one of these guys?"

"I was leading up to that," she said curtly. "There was always something else each spy informed us about before they told us they quit. These men aren't just based on a mythically bedtime story, they are advanced in every shape of the word. They are using science."

  "In what way?"

   "We don't know."

"Wow, you all kind of suck at your job don't you?"

   She snorted. "And you're better?"

"My job right now is to protect Amaris, how many times do I have to tell you people that I do not work for you. You insist on finding me jobs that supply me with money. I can step out at any point I so choose."

Her expression softened and I know she was giving me her best puppy pity eyes. I held up a hand. "If you mention anything of the pasts so help me I'll--"

"You can't kill me. And you know that." She interrupted. "But, fine. I won't give you any pity. But would you really let innocent people die just because you wanted to be stubborn? Are you really that cold hearted?"

I scoffed and leaned back in my seat. She can't possibly be serious. "Some people like to think my good looks and charm make up for my lack of emotions. So far I'm doing pretty well in society. Now can we get to the point of this dinner?"

She wanted to say more but instead she sighed and pointed at the folders. "You need--should," she corrected herself quickly, "target one person and go after them. They are still around somewhere in this area. They are cooking up something big and if we don't stop them. There is a possiblity that a lot more people could die."

Damnit. I wasn't shy when it came to murder because my hands aren't exactly clean, but sitting back and having someone die when I could have prevented it makes my skin crawl. I flipped through the folders and my thumb abruptly stopped along with my breathing. I pointed at the familar girls face and looked up at Roxanne. "Who... is this?"

"Why? Do you find her attractive or something?"

I sighed. "Now is not the time for your hormones. I'll ask again just in case you didn't hear the question the first time, who is this girl?"

"Her name is Alisa Martin. I didn't talk to all of these people directly but if she's in there then that must mean she used to work for our team but does not anymore."

Damnit again. I really know how to pick them don't I? "I'll go after her." I picked up my things, including the folder, and yanked a twenty out of my pocket. "That should cover the meal that we didn't eat."

"Wait. Why are you leaving so soon?"

"I need to speak with Chale and get a head start on this case."

The directions of her eyes flew from mine to my hand. She must be looking at the mark. But how did the mark really get there? I'm not the one to believe in superstitions but even this is making me want to start reading up on it. "What?"

"Your hand is marked. It looks like a moon."

"That's what happens when you accidently dig your nail into it," I lied quickly. "People are capable of having not so swell days Roxanne."

She didn't believe me at all but we both knew she wasn't going to say anything about it. Instead she let me walk away, with my head filling with my own darkened doubts.

A/N-This is going to be a short chapter because I really liked it the way it was and ended. Hope you don't mind and don't worry I won't do many A/N here.
