The next day, Tejasswi had a half-day off. She waited by the gate for Syra to be dropped by the school van. Just as she heard the longhorn, she peeked out and found a van turning into the road and she stepped out, with a wide grin.
The van halted just in front of their house and the door slid open. She saw the bus monitor go down before her. She finally saw Syra looking down, holding her lunch bag in one hand and her water bottle in the other, her bag slinging down heavily making her arch a bit backwards. She wore a cap which had a print of their school's logo. It was hiding her forehead and eyes.
Syra's eyes lifted and instantly met Tejasswi's. Seeing each other their lips curved. The bus monitor held Syra in the air before she could use the steps and dropped her to the ground safely. But Tejasswi froze for a second.
Biting the insides of her cheeks she waited as Syra ran towards her and hugged her legs. Tejasswi looked down and the smile appeared again. They didn't notice the van leaving as they took their moment to embrace each other.
"New Mommy," Syra squealed. Tejasswi chuckled, taking the bag off her shoulder. Syra removed her mask.
"How was Princess Syra's day at the Prince-princess Charm school?" She asked, holding Syra's hand in hers as they walked past the gate.
" We went to the lab to see how sublimation works," Syra answered eagerly.
"Ah-huh?" Tejasswi pulled the shoulder strap till its end and began adjusting it.
"And?" Tejasswi prompted.
"And Tanya brought a new princess pencil box today," Syra hopped over a small plantlet that was on their way. Tejasswi smiled, lifting her eyebrows.
"You also have a princess pencil box, right?" Tejasswi asked, doing the same adjustment to the other shoulder's strap.
"But it is different. It has a small slot for a jotter. The front had the picture of Elsa holding Anna when Anna was freezing," Syra whined, kicking a stone. The stone bounced off the ground skidding across the length of the pathway.
"But you like your Cinderella more, right?" Tejasswi asked. Syra twisted her lips in disdain.
"But my box is 3 months old," Syra timidly said. Tejasswi shook her head in disbelief. She pulled the straps evenly before slinging an arm over her daughter's shoulder.
" I'll get you one, provided, I need you to finish reading Little Woman, write down new words, and find its meaning," Tejasswi offered. Syra squinted her eyes in a glare. She pouted.
" That's a lot of work," Syra complained.
"No pain no gain," Tejasswi shrugged. She chuckled, reaching for Syra's cap. Syra stepped back.
