~If you ask me how I'm doing I'll say.. well.. hm~
-----------------------------------
Amity rushes away from Luz, clutching her paper to her chest. She calmly walks to the only place she could think of. Of course, the bathroom. She shuts the stall door, fumbling with the old lock for a second before it shuts. She unfolds her piece of paper, glancing down at the neatly written words.
'Luz,
do you want to go to the dance with me?
-Amity :)'It was stupid.
Why would Luz Noceda want to go with her?
I mean, sure Amity just wanted to go as friends. But the stinging feeling of rejection still rang in her head like it was just waiting to happen. Even if she did accept, it might be weird if she went with Willow as well. Not might, it would be weird. She started to feel tears well up in her eyes and ripped the paper right down the line between 'Luz' and the rest of the letter. Even if she accepted, what would Boscha think? She just couldn't lose that.. friendship. She just couldn't risk the loss of her mother's validation.
"Oh come on, who cares if we're late?" A too-familiar voice scoffs as Amity hears footsteps. She starts ripping up the note more and gets ready to flush it down the toilet and walk out to wash her hands. "Who's in there?"
Panicking, Amity unlocks the door, still holding the crumpled, ripped note in her balled up fist. She stares at Boscha, Skara, and some other girls she didn't recognize for a moment.
"Oh, hey Ami! You look... off." Boscha points out. "What's in your hand?"
"Oh, that!" Amity pauses, looking at her closed fist. "It's not important. Pretty stupid. I was about to throw it away."
"Oh come on, don't be embarrassed!" Boscha grabs Amity's wrist and her hand loosens, dropping the ripped up paper to the floor. Amity watches in horror as Boscha leans down to grab it. She quickly reaches and grabs the smaller piece of it.
"You were gonna ask someone to the dance?" Boscha laughs, piecing some of it back together. "Cute, who?"
"It doesn't matter, I changed my mind. I was just asking them as friends anyways." Amity waves her hand in the air, about to shove the other part of the note in her pocket before Boscha's eyes flick down to her hand.
"As friends, huh? Well who's the new bestie?" Boscha steps forward again, and Amity tosses the paper toward the trash can. It lands on the rim and bounces onto the floor, to Amity's horror. "It's okay, Amity! We all tell each other our crushes. It was about time you loosened up with us." Boscha started unfolding and smoothing it out, and her eyes widen as she looks down at the writing.
"Luz?" One of the girls behind Skara questions, starting to laugh. "Isn't that a girl?"
"I said I was only asking her as a friend, didn't I?" Amity responds honestly.
"Why would you have to write a whole note to ask someone as friends? And even if you were, why would you want to be friends with her?" Boscha asks, crumpling the paper back up and tossing it on the ground, stomping on it. "Oops- sorry, Luzbian." She reaches down and picks up every piece of ripped up purple paper and walks away, leaving Amity in the bathroom, alone, tearing up, and three and a half minutes late to class.
Who would've thought? Amity Blight? Lonely, late to class, pathetic, weak, and questioning her sexuality.
This is not how she had imagined her first semester of Hexside Academy going, to say the least.
--------------------------------------
"Have you ever wanted a girlfriend?" Luz's words shake Amity's previous thoughts away, surprising her. She hopes maybe she can pretend she didn't hear, awkwardly putting her earbuds back in and turning back to her homework. She was hoping the next hours of her dedicated work time would go by quick so she could go to sleep. So she could stop thinking about Boscha. About Luz.
A girlfriend, huh?
The words ring in Amity's mind, making it hard to work. What would her mom think of all of this? Of her roommate, of the bathroom incident, of the thoughts coursing through her mind.
No no no, obviously she doesn't want a girlfriend! No boyfriends, no girlfriends, no partners. Just school. The Emperor's University! None of the students there had time for romance, right? So neither did she.
-----------------------------------------
Amity silently walked to first period, surprisingly unbothered by Boscha so far. Her grip tightened on the strap of her tote bag as she worried about the terrible things Boscha could do about the misunderstanding about the platonic-ness of her note to Luz. Public humiliation was bad enough, but what if she were to show the paper to Amity's mom?
"Hey, Luzbian! Guess what?"
Speak of the devil.
"Would you stop that? I'm not gay, Boscha." Amity scoffs, turning to face the girl. To Amity's horror, she held up the now taped together note.
"I was thinking we could give this to your girlfriend." Boscha giggles. "Ooh, I know! Your mom would love this, wouldn't she?"
"What do you want from me Boscha?" Amity retaliates. "Just tell me what you want me to do."
"FIne." Boscha steps forward, her voice lowering. "Elias has a crush on you. I need you to go on a date with him and dump him afterwards so I can comfort him in his heartbreak." Amity almost throws up at the sound of this.
"I'm not gonna-" She pauses as Boscha dangles the taped up note in her face. "Okay, fine. Just leave me alone afterwards."
Maybe the idea of a girlfriend was better than this.
