Green Eggs And Ham, Queen

"Oh, I should warn you," Jakob says, glancing across at me. "Chaton's a bit..."

He trails off.

He looks worried.

Should I be worried?

Is Chaton sick? Is he a psychopath?

SHH mind! He's probably fine.

"A bit what?" I say frowning as we get out of the car, leaving the bags.

A tall, rich skinned man with close-cropped black curls bursts out the door.

"QUEENS! You made it! OMG your outfit is ad-or-ABLE! Slayyyy,"  he says clasping his hands before spinning on his heel and marching back into his house.

"He's a bit... Chaton," he says, "If you know what I mean."

I roll my eyes for about the millionth time today.

"Honey, I always know what you mean," I say as I swing my backpack over my shoulder.

We walk through the little gate at the front of the house, down the cracked concrete path and up the stone steps to the pink door

I raise my eyebrow at Jakob

"Don't ask. Inside's worse," he says and pushes open the door.

My beat up converse immediately sink into a thick, soft grass-green carpet.

The ceilings are strung with fake ivy and fairy lights while the walls are adorned with lots of  psychedelic looking posters.

Almost in a trance, I run my fingers over the black vinyls.

"I haven't taken two steps into this house and I'm already in love!" I laugh as I walk in and place my bag and shoes with the pile of other people's bags and shoes.

Strange, DJ-like music flows through the house like the golden sunlight that flows through the lacey curtains. The stairs are wood and they're obviously old.

Jakob drags me down the hall, though not before I notice the six or seven pairs of shoes.

"Oh no! Does he have guests? Are we interrupting them?" I ask, worried that we'll seem rude.

He chuckles and shakes his head.

"No, it's okay. Someone's always passing through here. It's like a halfway house; everyone's allowed here but not everyone knows that this place exists," he answers, calming my nerves.

The halfway house thing is so cool.

If I'm ever bored or in danger imma come here, since I'll be married to the owner's brother.

"Wait!" I stop Jakob just before the door the was about to open.

Even from this side, we can hear the voices.

"If there's always someone here, how does Chaton get any sleep? How does he study?" I'm genuinely curious.

"He sleeps in between visits or when me or mom comes round. He dropped out of college and does fashion designing and stuff, which he does from home," he hurriedly replies and then opens the door and walks in.

"-And I was just like Green Eggs And Ham queen!" Chaton yells and him and the two girls he's sitting with burst out laughing.

One of the girls has straight blonde hair and SCREAMS barbiecore while the other has frizzy hazel hair and seems more indie.

Barbiecore places a hand on indie's thigh and says, "I'm gonna go now sweetie, meet me later, kay?" and gives the girl a peck on the lips.

"Kay, bye 'Livia," she calls waving her hand.

Chaton and her are sat across from each other on cute blue bar stools so I can either sit next to indie or Chaton.

I choose Chaton.

While I sit down and greet him and the girl who is called Chole, I scan my eyes around for Jakob.

He's plating something up but I can't see what it is.

"You'll want to get to know Olivia and Chole well because Chole's my ROOMIE!!!" Chaton says (bringing me back to reality) and blows a kiss to her.

"Umm.. I'm confused, are you are Chole a thing or is it Olivia and Chole?" I ask, not understanding at all.

They glance at each other knowingly.

"Well, we're both gay but our parents are forcing us to get married-" Chole starts.

"Dumb laws," Chaton interjects. Jakob gives him a very pointed look.

"-But we're having and open marriage so we can both still date other people, so I'm dating Olivia," she finishes.

I nod my head in understanding.

I'm still confused.

Jakob arrives at the table with a gorgeous pink strawberry cake.

"Oh and something else about the Halfway, you always have to bring something with you, as a thanks. I did you a favour this time and this is for you and me, Niki, but next time you'll have to bring your own," he says, pointing a fork at me.

"Jeez, stop sounding like my mom," I say, shovelling cake into my mouth as everyone laughs.

Jakob Thoms, I think you're growing on me.
