"So, what'd you guys do?"

"We... Fitzy, decided that he was going to find out who your bio-mommy and bio-daddy were, so he asked me and Biana to help."

"And?"

"He asked the Forklenator for a meeting, and Biana Vanished me and her. We were in his weird... egg-shaped office, and Fitz... he broke the rules of telepathy. He shoved into Forkle's mind, and knocked him out. Then, he had me read his emotions. Eventually, he found out who they were and went to the Matchmakers the next day. Me and Biana... we didn't know he was going to the Matchmakers. We just thought he was making sure you guys weren't related, even though the Forklenator would never let you get close to someone who you were related to."

"Well, I'm not mad at you, Sencen."

"Does that mean I get that dare, Foster?"

"Yep."

While they had been mentally conversing, they had moved closer and closer, until their shoulders and knees were touching. "Fitz, he did that?..." Sophie said, her voice weak and croaky. Keefe looked down at the ground miserably and nodded, "It was also me," he sighed, "Are we never going to acknowledge that I'm a terrible person?"

Sophie looked into his ice-blue eyes. "Keefe. You are not, and I repeat, you are not a terrible person. No matter what happens with your mom, it's not related to you, at all." Keefe smirked weakly, "Mommy dearest is locked up in Lumenaria, along with all of the other Neverseen members," He looked at her, his icy eyes vulnerable. "So why does it feel like she's still out there, like she'll finally find a way to complete my legacy?"

"I... don't know. I'd say it gets better, but I don't know if it will," Keefe gently grabbed her hand, "No lies." He said steadily, his voice not wavering. "No lies." Sophie agreed, squeezing his hand. She moved closer to him, looking up at him through her lashes. He looked down at her and smirked, "Hey there, Foster."

She suddenly flushed, embarrassed. "I- I have to go," She blurted, and ran off. She ran toward the front door, and flung it open. Luckily, Edaline and Grady were heavy sleepers. She softly padded up to her room and looked out her window, glimpsing a flash of blond hair. Sighing, she picked up her Imparter and hailed Biana.

"Hey Soph!"

"Hey."

"Look, I have to tell you something..."

"Keefe already told me, and I forgive you." Sophie promptly said. Biana looked at her, confused. "You... forgive me for liking Tam?" Sophie's cheeks heated, "No- I didn't know what you were talking about." Biana laughed, "Okay?" Sophie's eyes widened, "Wait, you like Tam?" Biana flushed red. "Yeah."

"Tam Song?"

"Mhm."

"That's so cute, Biana!"

"He's even number one on my Match List!"

Sophie sobered at the thought of the Match Lists. "Biana, why didn't you tell me?" She mumbled, her voice low. Biana looked down guiltily. "Tell you what?" Biana said innocently. "Tell me that you, Fitz, and Keefe invaded Mr. Forkle's mind and then told the Matchmakers everything?"

Biana's eyes flitted around, "I... Fitz said not to tell you. And Keefe was so guilty about it... I thought it might... y'know." Sophie nodded. Guilt... The elvin mind was incredibly fragile, and if an elf felt guilt it could break their mind. Sophie shuddered at the thought, remembering what happened with Alden. Then she remembered the things Fitz had said. "You're defective!" He had shouted, wild-eyed, tone dripping with derision. The way he'd made her feel... she didn't know why she had ever accepted it. She was worth more than the angry, bitter words of an immature boy. But still...

She trembled at the thought of it, tugging on her eyelashes. "Biana, I don't think I like Fitz anymore. I don't think I can." Biana smiled sadly, "I understand." Then she sat up and wrinkled her brow. "Well, I don't actually understand, because he's my brother... but you know what I mean!" She said cheerfully. Sophie rolled her eyes, "Way to ruin a moment." Biana widened her eyes at her, "WE WERE HAVING A MOMENT?" Sophie groaned, "I think you've been around Keefe too much."

Biana smirked at her. "Keefe, you say?" Sophie blushed, and mock-glared at Biana. "What about him?" Biana sighed, "If I could throw a pillow through an Imparter, I would." Sophie laughed, "That's probably why you can't." Biana rolled her eyes and shrugged. "Whatever. Now, Keefe. Sencen. Who are we kidding? He's gorgeous." She wasn't wrong.

All elves were jaw-droppingly gorgeous, but there was something particularly handsome about Keefe Sencen—and he was well aware of it. Not that she minded, but still... Biana's "Sophie! Focus!" snapped her back to reality. "Um... yes?" Sophie said sheepishly. "Keefe. Gorgeous." Biana said sharply, sighing. Sophie nodded. "Yep." Biana looked at her, exasperated. "Maybe we can talk at Foxfire tomorrow? I'm getting pretty tired." Sophie nodded, "Sure! I think we have some of the same classes, right?" Biana flipped her hair, "Yup." Sophie turned off the Imparter and stuffed it in her drawer.

What's going to happen? Do I even like Keefe? Do I still like Fitz? I probably do like Fitz, he's Fitz! Ugh, and things feel awkward and stilted with Keefe, at least for me. Not for him, but I think he's hurt. And Fitz... How could he invade Mr. Forkle's mind like that? And for what? To just... be able to be Matched with me?  I don't know what I should do. Nothing? Something? Maybe I should tell Mr. Forkle?

Sophie sighed and laid down on her feather-soft bed. She snapped her fingers twice and the lights dimmed, and she drifted off to a peaceful sleep.

Running. She was running, away from everyone, everything. The Neverseen, the Black Swan's disappointment, her Unmatchable status. She sprinted forward, channeling energy into her legs, straining to outrun the black, sharp-toothed monster than lurked in her consciousness, all that was left of her echo. A split appeared in the space in front of her, and she gratefully sprinted into the void, wishing for oblivion, wondering where to go.
