(Warning: spoilers)
Everyone knows Merlin ends with the title character walking alone in the modern world, still waiting for Arthur. Right?
Wrong.
Everyone knows Merlin ends with Merlin taking a walk, in the form of an old man, that he looks out across the lake, and that a big truck goes past. Those are the facts. The rest is only so much speculation. So let's speculate happily shall we?
Option 1 (which was inspired by "A Series of More Fortunate Endings" by Unformal Sorrelle on fanfiction.net): Arthur returned years ago, freeing Merlin to age normally. By now, Arthur and co. are all in their eighties, complaining about bad hips, whacking each other with canes, and teasing each other mercilessly. Merlin looked out across the lake because it had fond memories.
Option 2: Arthur had returned recently. Merlin was using an aging spell and looked out at the lake out of habit.
Much better.
