Chapter 39
Shao Ling gasped as he regained his consciousness. He looked around at the forest with anxiety written all over his face. It was still the dark and eerie forest he and Lian Ren went to. The image of Lian Ren's past self was still vivid inside his head, giving him a strange, heavy feeling enveloping his chest for an unknown reason.
Lightly caressing his head, Shao Ling looked down and saw that Lian Ren was still unconscious on his thighs. Shao Ling heaved a breath of relief as he subconsciously raised his left hand and touched Lian Ren's cheek. His face was cold as usual. Now that Shao Ling has regained his memories, it still hurts him to see Lian Ren in his arms. However, he knew that everything that happened back then was his fault, and there would be no chance to turn back time and undo what he did.
With a throbbing pain in Shao Ling's chest, he gently tapped Lian Ren's left cheek twice and whispered, "Lian Ren, can you hear me?" As expected, there was no response.
"Even after regaining your lost memories, you still look after that scum?" Shao Ling shifted his gaze at the nine-tailed fox who was sitting atop the tree and was watching them.
The nine-tailed fox shifted his fiery gaze at the unconscious Lian Ren, and his pale face let out a scowl: "Seriously, humans, cultivators, or even demons. They are all stupid. Always blinded by their emotions or desires."
Shao Ling ignored him and continued to tap Lian Ren's cheek lightly. Little by little, he was sensing Lian Ren's aura in his spiritual core, and it seems like Lian Ren is slowly regaining his consciousness. The nine-tailed fox lay on the branch of the tree, rested his hand on his chin, and continued to watch Shao Ling with an indifferent gaze. Later on, Shao Ling heard hysterical laughter coming from the nine-tailed fox and glanced at him.
"You are stupid, child. If you want that bastard to wake up, you should be begging me to bring his consciousness back rather than tapping his face like an idiot," the nine-tailed fox said with a scoff.
"Enough," Shao Ling replied with a sharp gaze.
The nine-tailed fox was offended by his words and jumped down the tree, wearing a frown on his pale and gloomy face. His large and fluffy nine white tails spread out as he walked in Shao Ling's direction, and the tiny bells tied as a bracelet to his ankles made a small ringing sound as he walked. Slowly, a white, eerie divine energy started to leak out on the edges of the nine-tailed fox's body as he approached Shao Ling with a frown.
"Your choice of words is indeed poor, child. How dare you say 'enough' to me, a divine being? Although you are called a cultivator master in your realm, I am still a thousand years older than you. With a lift of my finger, I can tear you apart and rip you to shreds." Every word coming out of the nine-tailed fox's lips let out a heavy aura around the forest, but Shao Ling stood still and stared at him with a straight face while holding Lian Ren in his arms.
Shao Ling's response was silence. The nine-tailed fox laughed once again and bended down, roughly sliding his index finger on Shao Ling's chin. "Now you're silent? You're a peculiar being. I don't even know what you saw in this scumbag."
"..........."
"I know that you truly loathe him deep inside, right? He went back to your sect, destroyed it, and massacred all of those innocent people that you devoted your life to protecting. It's gruesome, isn't it?"
