Being best friends, you and Maddy knew each other better than anyone. Maybe even better than both of your now ex-boyfriends. Mostly Nate though, not because there were things Fezco knew about you that Maddy didn't. But because, like most people, he had a warped view of who Maddy really was. Confident, extroverted and at times crude, yes. But she was far more than just her "mean girl" exterior. At heart, Maddy was a genuinely good person and friend.

Other people, rightfully so, would have felt some type of way after what happened on New Year's Eve. It's exactly why you were so hesitant to talk with Maddy to begin with. But after and even before you explained to her how Nate got Fezco raided, she knew he deserved it.

"Of course, he called the fucking police." She says, rolling her eyes. "He's such a bitch."

"I heard that!" The young boy yelled from his floaty in the middle of the pool.

"I didn't say anything." Maddy yelled back before giving you a smile.

Babysitting wasn't the kind of job you expected Maddy to thrive in, but clearly you were wrong.

"Weren't you just telling Cassie about the beautiful text he sent you this morning."

"I know, but it's like complicated." She told you, knowing you didn't need more explanation beyond that. "What about you and raggedy Ann?"

Brows pinching together, you made a very telling face, opening your mouth with the assumption that you'd think of something to say, but you drew a blank. Again, you and Fezco were in this gray area, you'd made up, and it was obvious that you both wanted to be more. And yet you weren't.

"It's complicated." You copy Maddy's words, expecting her to take the answer for what it was.

"Why?"

But she didn't.

"Uhh." Shifting in the lounge chair, your mind was no longer drawing a blank. "I don't know, we just haven't talked about what we are. Plus, there's the whole Lexi and Faye thing."

You tried to say it as casually as possible, and you were sure that you did, but the sudden feeling of Maddy's eyes piercing into you told a different story.

"What Lexi and Faye thing? And who the fuck is Faye."

"I heard that!" Theo yells, and you use it as an opportunity to change to subject.

"Maybe he's hungry." Maddy narrows her eyes at you. "Hungry kids complain to parents."

She licked her teeth, eyes staying on you for a moment before the three of you go inside. Theo's parents were rich, so along with a big house and a pool they had a fully equipped kitchen. As if having a stuffed mouth would stop Maddy from questioning you. It wouldn't. Plus, with her distracting Theo with a movie, you knew she was planning to really grill you.

But not in the way you expected. Maddy had a way of getting things out of you without even trying, or at least by pretending to not try. Leaving the thought of the conversation or more so its topic to fester in your mind before she even brought it up. Letting you be the one to do it instead. And so you did.

"I mean It's not really Faye I'm worried about ya know." You started spontaneously and automatically, Maddy was all ears. "I know he's just doing her a favor, plus she has a boyfriend"

"So then it's Lexi..." She says with a worried face, not exactly liking taking about Lexi without her being there.

There was no negative intention, and it wasn't like you were talking about her behind her back. She just happened to be a part of the conversation.

"No- yes." You were quick to correct yourself, conflicted. "I mean, it's obvious she's interested in him, and they were acting very friendly at that party."

"I thought boys were supposed to be friendly to the girls." Theo butts in with this innocent logic and sweet smile.

"They are, but sometimes boys are too friendly to the wrong girl when they should only ever be that friendly to only one girl." You tell him and his smile turns drops in confusion.

"Like, you know how your dad is extra nice to your mom and only her. It's like that, but if he was extra nice to another mommy." Maddy rephrases your words, and suddenly the boy understood and returned to his food and movie.

You couldn't hide the smile that overtook your face, they were so cute. Seeing how well the two of them got along made you genuinely happy.

"Yea, he's a little friendly-"

"Maddy he was straight up blushing and giggling, they both were. On top of that, she even came to the gas station."

Maddy is taken back for a second, commending Lexi for her bravery and be so forward with someone she was interested in. Regardless of the fact that it was Fezco. To say it was out of character for Lexi would be an understatement.

"So what if he's a little friendly, he's loved you since you guys were like fourteen."

"So has Nate." You remind her.

"Bitch be serious." She whispers, trying not to be heard by Theo. "Just be like a healthy couple and talk."

Amused, you rolled your eyes at her suggestion to be healthy and talk. It was probably good advice, but was odd coming from her.

"Healthy." You say as if the word was foreign and truthfully when it came to you Maddy and relationships it kinda was.

"Yea, I know it sounds like fucking impossible for us, but we have to like try."

"Or maybe we both stay single and just give each other the love these idiots won't."

You give her a soft smile, and Maddy playfully glares at you for a split second before dropping it and returning the smile.

"Fine, but you better talk to him, you guys are way too good for each other to just fuck it up." She tells you seriously. "You deserve all that good shit."

Your eyes drop from hers, now feeling a bit solemn about the conversation.

"So do you." You tell her, knowing it's the truth.

The two of you may not have had the best track record when it came to romantic relationships, but at least you had each other. There would be always be complications with boys, tears, and heartbreak, but as long as you and Maddy could rely on each other in those moments of desperation you both knew you'd be okay.
