Because of its connections with the Roman Empire, the Philippine islands, though not unified politically, had absorbed a lot of cultural aspects of Rome. From clothing to the use of parchment instead of other perishable materials, these natives became more and more sophisticated in their own time. They even adopted the Roman shield and created their own emblem, which is a simple cross. Also, they learned how the Roman empire works and eventually adopted the role of the Senate, but they only adopted the title of king, which is inspiration from the Bible, instead of emperor. But still, chieftains had power over their villages. This results in a less complex hierarchy and more intimate relationships between kings and chieftains. But, this doesn't mean the natives had completely abandoned their own culture. Instead, they combined their own culture with the Greco-Roman ones, making a hybrid in the process.
