At the same time, the two dominant religions of the Philippine islands, the Baybayin Church and the Roman Catholic Church, got locked into a rivalry, both politically and religiously. Spanish writers described the practices of the Baybayin Church as "lacking in ritual." Meanwhile the Baybayin Church stayed away from politics, wanting to stay neutral in political matters.
But, the Spanish Inquisition, wanted to abolish the establishment of the Baybayin Church and converted the natives by force. But, the Baybayin authorities, including the two kings, rejected the proposal, stating that it wasn't a thing they had agreed on. They only allowed toleration, not forced conversion. This angers the Spanish Inquisition and decided to attempt to stage a coup against the kings, but it often failed because of the new tactics and technologies by the Baybayins. As a result, the trust between the two churches deteriorated a bit.
