High School AU

Cicadas were singing loudly and shouts coming from the soccer field could be heard. It was just another summer day like any he had spent since years but it always felt nice to simply sit there and watch the scenery.
Just the sound of life vibrating around him.
A cool breeze brushed the strands of his hair to his face and he moved his hand to push them aside only for more coming to hide his view.
It was only after a few seconds that he realized that there were some red locks which did not belong to him and that's when he knew she was back, a soft chuckle tinkling behind him.
A cold drink was then pressed against his cheek, sending a slight shiver through his body.
"Here's your almond soy milk, Xiao." the girl cheered.
"Thank you."
He took the brick of milk from her and she gave him a smile before sitting beside him on the step of the staircase.
It was summer break so the school was mostly empty, everyone preferring to spend their time at home or somewhere else, and yet, they were both here. Just the two of them, enjoying the warm rays of the sun and gazing at the shape of the clouds.
"Hu Tao," he spoke.
"Mhm?"
The girl stuck her straw in a strawberry yogurt to drink it, taking a sip while waiting for the boy to continue.
"What... What do you want to do later?" he asked.
Hu Tao didn't answer yet and held her bottle on the tip of her knees, lifting her eyes to the sky with a smile drawn on her face, thoughtful.
"It's not like you to ask things like that. Are you worrying about something?"
Xiao didn't reply and only looked at her from the corner of his eyes, sipping his drink silently.
"What I'll do later, hm...?" she resumed, not minding the quietness of the boy. "I don't know."
"You don't?" he repeated, raising a brow.
"Mhm. You don't know either, do you?" A laugh escaped her lips and she put her drink on the side, extending her hand to the boy's and delicately grasping his to intertwine their fingers. "We still have a year to go so we have a lot of time ahead of us."
"But after that?"
"Then... There will be even more time. You see, even if we go to college, or start working right after high school, we won't know what will happen the next day. Anything could happen and our decisions could also be influenced by that, making our future unpredictable. So... I'm not anxious."
"I guess... It's a way to think about it."
Hu Tao chuckled.
"Right~? Also... If one of us ever gets lost on the way," she glanced at him, her voice softening, "I'm sure the other will be there to help."
Xiao's eyes widened but he sketched a very faint smile in reply, tightening his hold on her hand.
A comfortable silence came to settle between them again until the boy decided to break it.
"Thank you." he whispered.
"You don't need to thank me."
Hu Tao smiled while letting her head rest on her knees, her red eyes staring at Xiao's amber ones.
There was no need to thank her as she said, she didn't answer his question nor truly gave any useful advice to ease his worry.
Bad things could happen and only fate knew if they would meet misery or bliss.
However, she believed their bond was strong enough to overcome any hardships and the other also thought the same although he would probably never admit it.
They didn't need words to communicate their feelings, they cared about each other in their own way and there was nothing else to add.
