It was probably past midnight when Zhongli suddenly woke up from his slumber. His throat felt dry so he got out of bed to get a cup of water in the kitchen.
However, as he walked in the hallway, he noticed a faint light coming from the office of his wife. He sketched a faint smile while looking at the door ajar and continued his way to the kitchen.
Once there, instead of just getting the cup of water he initially wanted, he put some in the coffee maker and waited for it to boil. His arms were crossed against his chest as the sound of the machine echoed ghostly in the dark room.
Then he heard a 'click', a sign that the drink was ready and got two cups before pouring the liquid in it.
Now holding the two warm mugs, he walked back to the corridor but rather than heading to the bedroom, Zhongli stood in front of the office's door, knocking softly on it with the tip of his slipper before pushing it wide open.
Ningguang immediately lifted her head at the sound of the door opening, finally looking away from all the files on her desk which she had been looking through since the morning. The woman had bags beneath her eyes and was obviously exhausted.
"Why are you still awake?" she asked, slightly irritated.
"I could ask you the same."
He gave her a smile as he approached her desk, putting one of the cups he was holding in front of her and moving behind her to put a comforting hand on her arm, sipping his drink.
Ningguang fell back against her chair with a sigh, thanking her husband for it and taking a big gulp of it.
"Sorry, I still have some files to check before going to bed. You don't have to wait for me, it's already late."
"It's already late as you said so you should come with me too." He put his mug down and started to massage her shoulders with expert hands. "You work too much, it isn't a bad thing but you need to learn how to rest too."
"I can't do that yet." she frowned and rubbed her temple.
"You're a great director, darling." he said while kissing her forehead. "Your workers won't die if you leave those files just for one day."
"Maybe... You're right..."
"I'm glad we could come to an agreement."
"Wait what-"
Zhongli suddenly lifted her like a bride, the woman instantly blushing to the gesture and putting her arms behind his neck so as not to fall.
"I already said so, didn't I? You need to rest."
"I can walk to the bedroom by myself you know..."
Ningguang was blushing a bit and muttered against his chest yet she didn't move away and let him bring her to their room where he delicately put her on the bed. Zhongli also came to lie beside her, slipping his arms around her waist.
"Goodnight, my dear."
The man pressed a kiss against her lips before hugging her frame and stroking her head with his hand. It didn't take long for the woman to fall asleep and when he saw her eyes closed, Zhongli gave her one last kiss on her forehead, also letting his mind drift to dreamland after that.
