Dad
I knew the girls would be furious. Actually they took it better than I hoped. How they missed the giant "For Sale" sign in the front yard is beyond me. Now is my chance to live off the grid and I'll feel closer to Mary.
As soon as my wife found out she was pregnant the second time I begged her to move away from it all. "We have enough savings Mary. The cabin is paid in full. No one would be able to find us."
Mary had objected, "Reggie there's no way! I barely know how to be a mother. What if something happened to us living way out there in the woods?"
I pleaded, "What could happen? There's plenty of wood for the fire. I can hunt and fish. We'd be real pioneers. We can finally be away from all this Covid nonsense."
"Reggie, don't let Covid be your excuse to run away. It's much milder now. No one even wears masks anymore. It's finally no worse than the common cold. I love you Reggie but I want my girls to thrive not merely survive." Mary wouldn't hear of it. She loved her church family. She practically ran the children's program. "I can't imagine my life any different than it is right now. It's perfect."
Everything seemed right in the world but I knew different. Mary wasn't naive but she'd rather pray than be up to date on politics." She quoted Veggie Tales, "God is bigger than the boogie man. He's bigger than Godzilla or the monsters on TV—including politicians..."
"You can't live on blind faith, Mary. Our economy is past failing. Those in charge of our government are more communist than democratic. And I've been watching these Youtube videos on the increase of natural disasters..."
Mary stopped folding her baby pink and buttercup yellow receiving blankets. "Okay Reggie... that's enough. Why are you buying into scare tactics and conspiracy theories? We've always had hurricanes and earthquakes."
I tried to get her to listen to reason. "But things are getting worse Mary!"
Mary pushed the wicker laundry basket aside and sat on the bed. "Jesus said things would get worse...In Luke chapter 24 he spoke of wars, rumors of wars, earthquakes, pestilence... I just don't see how running away will help."
I sat next to her and grabbed both her hands. "I'm not saying we run away... I just want us to be ready. Be prepared."
Mary put the laundry basket between us and continued folding baby pajamas. "We are more prepared than most people. We've got the cabin just in case... You bring up supplies once a month right?" She picked up the basket. "So if something happens we leave. In the meantime we live. Perfect love casts out fear."
Mary had a scripture for everything. I wonder what her scripture would be for this?
