I cannot believe this is happening to me! My mother dies out of the blue. I'm only 17 years young! My dad is selling the only home we've ever known and I've gotta live with my Holy Roller relatives. Aunt Catherine will scrutinize every outfit I wear—every boy I date! How could daddy leave me during the most important year of my life? I'm finally the head cheerleader and it's senior year! Who's gonna watch me cheer or star in this year's musical? I think it's gonna be Grease. With my voice, hair and complexion I'll make the perfect Sandy. Everybody says so!

Meg said I had the weekend to pack all of my belongings into three totes labeled: Save. Sell. Scratch. Scratch? As in throw away? The horror!

I told Meg, "I can't throw away my things!"

Meg perused through my closet. "Even better—give them away! Aims, you have more clothes than you know what to do with." She pulled out a bedazzled jean jacket with Minnie Mouse on the back. "Are you ever gonna wear this?"

I grabbed the denim with the pink rhinestones. "Hey! I bought this Sophomore year when the cheer squad went to Disney for nationals! We came in 3rd place!"

Meg rolled her eyes. "Whatever Amy! It's hideous and you're never gonna wear it."

I put on the jacket and admired myself in the mirror. Removing the pink velour scrunchy from my wrist I pulled my long blond hair into a high ponytail. I said, "I can still pull this off! I'm not throwing away memories. Mom gave me the money for this jacket so I'm keeping it."

"Fine Amy but you can only keep what fits into 3 totes. Figure it out." Meg left in a huff.

Meg was always in a huff. Mother said it's the Oldest Child Syndrome. The oldest daughter always acts like a little mother.

I smirked. I told mom, "She's a little mother alright."

Mom objected, "Amy!" But then we both giggled about it.

Loneliness set in. Oh mom I need you. Who's gonna go prom dress shopping with me then buy me Smoothie King and Chipotle after?
