Jack Harkness recently began traveling with the Doctor again, and had met Y/n, his companion at the time. The three of them had just narrowly escaped a widespread Cyberman attack that they'd put an end to, once and for all. They sat in the TARDIS console room, and Jack had brought out drinks.

"I don't know where you found these." The Doctor was saying, examining the spirits he'd been handed.

"There's a surprising amount of alcohol in your kitchen, Doctor." Jack laughed, downing half his beer in a single swig.

"Somehow, I'm not surprised." Y/n had denied the offer of drinks, and instead nursed a glass of water between her knees.

"Well you should be." The Doctor said, "When have you ever seen me drink?"

"Shall I list them alphabetically or chronologically?" Jack asked jokingly, and the Doctor shot him a scowl.

"I only took you to that bar a few times."

"A few times is enough, Doctor. Nothing is more entertaining than you wasted." Jack teased. "I've got stories, Y/n, so many stories."

"Oh, you wouldn't want to hear them they're really not..." the Doctor trailed off when he turned to see Y/n asleep on the control console, head resting peacefully in her arms. The two were quiet a few moments, the silence filled only by the soft hum the TARDIS as they drifted somewhere in deep space.

"So," Jack said finally, swirling his glass, "You two, huh?"

"If you mean that in she's my companion for the time being, you are correct." The Doctor continued to watch Y/n, absently stirring his drink.

"There's no hiding it from me old man. I've seen this before." Jack gestured to the Doctor, who finally turned to look at him.

"I have absolutely no idea what you're talking about."

"She reminds you of Rose." Jack said simply. "And from the stories I've been told, she's a lot like Clara." The Doctor was suddenly very interested in the slowly melting ice that bobbed about in his glass. "You're allowed to have feelings."

"What good has that ever done me?" The Doctor snapped, "Anyone I've ever loved has been taken from me! It's better to keep her at arms length."

"So you'll be okay to sit by and watch if she finds someone else? You'll be content when she decides to leave the TARDIS for good?"

"Jack- -"

"Listen, Doctor, I know it's not easy, but you can't bottle up your emotions. They're only human. Or, Timelord, I guess." Jack took a sip of his drink before he continued. "I've seen you two together, and I think she'd be more than happy to have a relationship with you."

The Doctor raised an eyebrow at him. "An old man like me?" Jack nodded encouragingly. "I don't know. What if she gets all- - touchy? People do that in relationships, you know."

Jack smirked at him over the rim of his glass. "Do you want her to touch you?" The Doctor quickly hid his face in his cup, cheeks blazing.

"That's- be quiet." Jack laughed quietly, finishing off his drink.

"Well," Jack said, standing. "I'm going to bed. See you in the morning, Doctor." Harkness shot the Timelord one last grin before heading down the hall, empty glass in hand. The Doctor sat in silence, listening to Y/n's soft breaths.

Jack was wrong. She was like Rose and Clara, but she was different. She was special. And he refused to let anything hurt her. He would not lose her like he'd lost Rose and Clara.

Before he could stop himself, the Doctor brushed a gentle hand through Y/n's hair. She stirred under his touch, leaning into him slightly.

"Doctor..." she murmured, making his hearts flutter in his chest. He quickly pulled his hand away, pulse thrumming. What was he thinking? He couldn't actually take Jacks advice and start a relationship with her. Could he?

"Doctor!" Y/n hung from the ledge, struggling to keep herself from falling into the void below. "DOCTOR!"

"Y/n!" He yelled. He kicked the Cyberman he was fighting in the back of the knees and rushed for her. At the same time, the Cyber systems were drawing power at increasing speeds. If they were allowed to 100%, they could wipe out Earth completely. The Doctor had to choose, between someone he cared about and the Earth. Again.

Nonononono he couldn't do this, he couldn't be forced to choose, not again. He couldn't, he just couldn't. There had to be something he could do. What could he use to his advantage?

Y/n's fingers were starting to slip.

"Power at 98%." The Cyber system announced.

"Doctor, a little help here!"

Jack.

Jack, he was the missing piece! The Doctor wouldn't have to chose after all. He produced his screwdriver, imploding the Cybermen who had Jack cornered.

"Shut down the cyber computer!" The Doctor yelled, tossing him his screwdriver. Then, right when Y/n couldn't hold on any longer, the Doctor dove and caught her hands, pulling her up from the edge.

"Powering off..." the Cyber computer announced from behind them. Being connected, the other Cybermen followed suit, bending and going dark.

"Yes!" Jack cheered, rushing over to wrap Y/n and the Doctor in a victorious hug. "Oh, I thought that wouldn't work, but you never fail, Doctor!" Jack kissed the Doctor on the cheek, and then Y/n, both of which went red.

"Why, with the hugging Jack?" The Doctor complained, struggling out of his grasp, but he was smiling. The days during which no one died were few and far between for the Doctor, but today everyone lived. Today he'd saved everyone with not a single casualty. His hearts felt warm and happy, and he laughed as Jack spun Y/n around excitedly, the two cheering.

Inside the TARDIS, Jack went to clean up, still laughing. The Doctor pulled a few switches on the console, and Y/n leaned on a railing nearby.

"Thank you, Doctor." She said finally, "For saving me."

"It's what I do best." Was his simple reply as he pulled a final lever with a flourish. As the Doctor turned however, he was surprised by yet another hug, but not by Jack. The Doctor awkwardly put his hand around Y/n's waist as she held him close.

"I'm serious." She murmured, "Had you been a moment later- - I would have died."

"Best not to dwell on the could have beens."

Y/n was quiet a moment, head leaning against his chest. For some reason, the Doctor didn't push her away. She listened to the beat of his hearts, a gentle melody that put her at ease. The Doctor gently lifted her chin, and their eyes met.

"I will never be a moment later." He promised. He pressed his lips to her forehead and headed down the hallway, leaving Y/n to gaze after him, wondering why her heart was beating so fast.
