Chapter 7: dreams of the past

Dave felt himself drift off to sleep and didn't listen to what Jack was saying. He was to tired to argue about his father. He heard something along the lines of

'I love you Dave'

Before he was fully submerged in his sleep.

...

"Dave come on!" Henry said and Dave took a few deep breaths.

"I'm scared father, there's a lot of people. What if is mess up?" Dave was trembling and Henry sighed.

"Dave, remember everything we practiced. Just imagine they're not even there" Henry said and put his hand on Dave's shoulder. Dave took a few deep breaths again and straighten his posture.

"I'm ready" he said confidently and Henry smiled.

"Ok, when I say your name, you come up on the stage" Henry reminded Dave and left, Dave stood at the door, and waited for his name to be called.

"Ladies and gentlemen, boys and girls, welcome to Dr. Henry Miller's Circus!" Henry dipped and took and deep bow. People clapped and cheered. When the noises died down Henry continued to talked.

"And please give a round and a clause for my assistant and son Dave Miller!" Henry announced and took another bow, this time holding his hat out towards the door. Dave ran onto the stage and everyone started to clap and cheer again.

"Welcome to the circus that makes the impossible, possible! Or you get your money back" Henry didn't bother projecting his voice for the last bit. Henry looked down at Dave and Dave looked up at Henry, they both turned back to face the crowd.

"Enjoy the show!" They said together.

Dave felt more confident as the show went on, him and father did stunts together, told jokes and watched the crowd laugh and cheer. He was finally apart fo the thing he loved dearly when he was a child. He grew up on the circus and now he was apart of it.

"We're are going to take a little break, see you all in half an hour for the second half of the show" Henry announced and walked off the stage with Dave following behind him.

"Did I do well, father?" Dave asked once they got backstage.

"Of course, Dave" Henry said without even looking at his son, he patted him on the head a few times then took off his gloves.

"You may do what you like, but make sure your back before the show begins" Henry said and walked off. Dave decided to go and play with the other children and maybe grab something to eat. He skipped to the front of the circus and purchased and hot dog with some money he found in his pocket. As he was eating his hotdog he saw a woman really distressed.

"You ok ma'am?" Dave asked approaching the woman.

"Your Dave correct? Could you see if my child, Jackson, wondered backstage? I can't find him anywhere" She asked and Dave nodded.

"Don't worry, I will try my best to find your son" Dave said confidently and woman smiled.

"Oh thank you!" She said. Dave made his way backstage calling Jackson's name.

"Jackson! Your mother worried about you, could you come out?" He called but got no answer. Then he felt someone lay a hand on his shoulder.

"Dave, what are you doing?" Henry asked and Dave got a little startled.

"A mother asked I could find her son, she can't find him" Dave said and Henry chuckled.

"Don't worry, I'll find him" Henry said and left Dave on his own. Dave shrugged and took another bite of his hotdog.

The second half of the show began and Henry did more amazing stunts, more with his employees this time. One of the stunts some acrobats formed a human rope, grabbed Dave flung him, he laughed as he bounced on the net. The crowd gasped then clapped when they saw Dave wasn't hurt. Before Dave knew it, the show was over.

"Thank you for coming! I hoped you all enjoyed the show" Henry said, all the crew got in a line bowed, including Dave. The crowd cheered once again and then one by one started to leave their seats.

"You did well Dave" one of the acrobats, Lilly, said.

"Thank you! I really enjoy it" Dave exclaimed and Lilly laughed.

"You should be proud of your son Henry, I think he added a bit more excitement to the show" another said.

"Oh I'm thrilled" Henry said sarcastically, Lilly scoffed and bent down to Dave's level.

"Well we thought you did great" she said and rubbed Dave hair, Dave chuckled.

"Dave, I suggest you get back to your schooling" Henry said and Dave sighed.

"Yes father" Dave replied and walked back to the caravan.

(I imagine Dave's homeschooling is like mine, he has booklets and it basically teaches him things so he doesn't need a teacher.)

Dave was doing his math when Henry walked in slammed the door behind him.

"What's wrong dad?" Dave asked and Henry didn't reply. Then he heard a knock on the door and Henry opened it.

"What are you doing? This area is off limits!" Henry exclaimed.

"Sir we're the police, we have authority to do this" A man said and Henry dragged his hand down his face. Dave was interested when he heard the word police, he stopped doing his work to listen.

"Jackson has gone missing at this circus and we're wondering if you know anything about this?" Another said and Henry sighed.

"He probably just ran off, he must of gotten distracted by something, he shouldn't be to far" Henry said and closed the door. He looked over at Dave.

"Do your work Dave" Henry sighed and Dave immediately got back to work.

Dave woke up to Jack who gently shook him.

"Come on, it's time to go home" He said, Dave nodded and rubbed his eye. Jack helped Dave off the couch, Dave smiled at him and Jack smiled back.

"Hey I think I remember you saying some like 'I love you Dave' before I feel asleep" Dave said as they both left the break room.

"I- uh...as friends" Jack stuttered and blushed slightly which caused Dave to laugh.

"Love ya too sportsey, as friends of course" Dave replied and Jack smiled.
