Chapter 8: The Upside Down

You all got to work as soon as you stepped out of Jonathan's car.

You armed the house with traps, lining the ceilings and walls with recently discarded string lights to alert you of the creature's arrival.

As the traps were set, you began hammering nails into your baseball bats, creating your ultimate weapon. Nancy prepared the gun, confident that she would kill this thing once and for all. For Barb, for everyone.

Tossing your extra bat to Jonathan, you did a double check of everything. The house was secure. You were prepared. With a quick glance at eachother, you all sighed.

"Now what?" Jonathan asked, staring at the result of all the hard work.

"We wait." Nancy replied with a stoic expression.

"What what if it doesn't come here?" Jonathan began pacing, careful not to touch the carefully orchestrated traps.

"It will." You said with a quiet voice, avoiding their eyes and shifting on your leg slightly. You had a plan in your mind, one that you hadn't shared yet.

"How do you know that?" Nancy looked at you while Jonathan furrowed his eyebrows. He follows your gaze to your leg and quickly puts the pieces together.

"No." He protested, walking to you. "You're not going to-"

"This is the only option, Jonathan." You give a small shrug. If your plan worked, no one would be hurt. Maybe just a little traumatised but alive none-the-less.

"What is?" Nancy cut in, looking between the two of you.

You both stayed silent. You didn't want to tell Nancy. Not only had you kept your injury a secret but now you were planning to put yourself in danger. She already lost one friend.

"Jonathan?" Nancy turns to the boy, searching for answers. Of course he would give them to her. He'd do anything for her.

"Y/N's going to be the bait." He grimaced, looking to the floor.

"What?" Nancy's voice raised slightly. You couldn't tell if she was panicked or angry. "Why?"

"It already has my scent, Nance." You admitted. She sent you a confused look and you knelt onto the floor, pulling up your jeans to reveal the mark the Demogorgon had left on you. A constant reminder of the terror.

"No." She shook her head furiously. "That's not happening, Y/N. No."

"Yes it is." You stayed stubborn, standing up and looking your friend in the eyes.

"The only reason it hasn't attacked me is because I haven't stayed in one place long enough." You sighed, taking a breath before resting your hand on her arm. "I just need to lead it here, Nance. And I promise you, I'll never let it get close enough to hurt me."

"But-"

"I'm just bait. We have a plan, it'll work." You reassured, smiling a little.

The girl in front of you finally sighed, shaking her head before pulling you into a hug.

"Fine. But if you die, I'll kill you." She chuckled sadly.

"So what's the plan exactly? Just to be safe." Jonathan asked, making sure everything went exactly as you organised.

"I'll go to the trailer park. It's the closest place to the creature that will allow it to pick up my scent again. Then, I'll leave a trail for it to follow, leading it back to the house." You nodded. You knew you should be afraid. Hell, you should even be a little nervous but for some reason, you've never felt more calm and sure in your life.
