Chapter 1 ~ The Begining

"It's a girl," the doctor said to an elderly woman. Not old, but not young either. Only about in her mid to late 40's though you would swear she was at least in her late 20's. The woman smiled and walked back into the hospital room where her daughter lay on the bed. The woman smiled down upon her daughter, who stirred under the thin white sheets.

"It's a girl, isn't it?" she asked her mother.

"Yes," she smiled, tears started to fill her eyes,

"I told you," the daughter smiled also. "The prophecy will be fulfilled." She fell back into a deep sleep from the pain medications.

~16 YEARS LATER~

I sat on my bed reading the book my mother gave me. It was a big, brown, leather-bound book of short paranormal stories. People swore it looked like a spell book and that I was a witch. I would just laugh and tell them that those things didn't exist. That they were just stories passed down to make children like us scared to leave the house at night and to do the right things. My mother told me rule number 1 was to never tell ANYONE, not even your closest friend. She said that we can't trust humans with that kind of knowledge.

I heard a knock at my door then it opened to reveal a middle aged, heavy-set woman with long curly dark burgundy hair and a kind face. Before she opened the door fully, two cats burst into my room; a fat calico bob-tail, and an all black cat with piercing blue eyes. The calico cat, my mothers familiar Cali, jumped onto the bay window while my familiar, Ice, jumped on my bed and curled up into a ball on my lap.

My mother came into the room bearing a plaid wrapped box. "Happy birthday, Alex," she said and smiled.

"Thanks Mom." I smiled back.

She walked into my room, sat on my bed, and handed me the box. "I thought I would give you my gift before your friends get here."

I stopped petting my cat and grabbed the box. I peeled off the paper and  the box to reveal a gorgeous smokey blue cloak, the same shade as my eyes. I picked it up out of the box and held the soft fabric in my hands.

"It's so beautiful," I said. Ice meowed in agreement, then jumped down from the bed and onto the bay window with Cali. "I love it." I hugged it to my chest and smiled at my mother.

"Well put it on."

I got up off the bed and put it around my neck and fastened it. "It looks good," she said. I walked to my full length mirror and smiled at my reflection. It matched my eyes perfectly.

"Mom?" I asked.

"Hmmm?"

"When will I get my powers? You said sixteen."

"Everyone is different, you may get them during the day, or you may get them tonight," she said, stepping behind me. I met my mothers clear blue gaze in the mirror.

"Okay," I sighed.

Just then we heard a knock at the front door followed by it opening. "I'm home!" a familiar voice yelled from the living room. I smiled knowing who it was.

I started to take off my cloak and threw it in my closet as my mother started to speak. "I'll go down and make her wait for a few before she-" She was cut off by my bedroom door flying open and my best friend, Alice, bounding into my arms.

"Happy birthday!" she squealed

I smiled and hugged her back. "Thanks, babe," I laughed. She let me go and held me at arms length.

"What did Mom get you for your birthday?" she asked. I loved her. She had been my best friend for years, she was practically my sister. She came over so much my mom pretty much adopted her.
