Chapter 5 ~ Damned Day

I sat on my bed for what seemed like forever just staring at the last picture with wide eyes and my mouth open. Ice meowed and snapped me out of my daze. She looked down at the picture then back at me with a worried look in her eyes.

I heard the front door open so I grabbed the notebook and bolted downstairs with my worried cat in tow. When I landed down stairs, Mother was already in the kitchen

"Hey, honey. How was school?" she asked without turning around. When I didn't answer, she faced me, her looks going from happy to be home to worried in only a few seconds. "What's wrong?"

I clutched my closed notebook to my chest and started to sob. I ran down to the basement and she followed. I set the notebook down on the chest and opened it to the first drawing. That was innocent enough. It was just of me and Kit in the water kissing.

"That's really good," she complemented.

"Turn the page. That's not the only one."

She turned the page, a dark room with two figures. Then again, Kit and the wolf. And again, the bloody battle. And again, the last picture, Sage with his foot on me. Her face became more terrified with each turn of the page. When she got to the last picture, she had gone completely white. She covered her mouth with her hand and closed her eyes. Silence filled the air.

I broke it first. "Well?"

She kept opening and closing her mouth as if she wanted to say something.

"Well?!" I half yelled.

"When did you do these?" she asked softly, not looking at me.

"My first three classes," I dropped my voice.

She looked at me then. "Did you know what you were doing? What you were drawing?"

"No. I wasn't really thinking about it. I thought it was just doodles along my note margins but when I got home and opened my notebook to study, I didn't have notes. I had those."

She looked past me at the bookshelf. "Maybe there is still time," she mumbled to herself.

"What?"

She sighed. "Nothing, honey. I'm going to start dinner."

We ate dinner in silence and after, I put my dishes in the sink and started up the stares, taking the picture with me.

"Alex," my mom called as I assended the stairs.

"Yes, Mother?" I turned my head slightly.

"I want you to stay home from school tomorrow."

"Okay," I sighed and went back to my room. I went to take a shower and climbed in bed. The last thought on my mind that night before I fell asleep was Kit.
