Chapter 2 ~ Him

School had started in early August and it was now late October. It had been four months since I was supposed to get my powers. I was on the bus standing by the window with Alice and Lakoda sitting beside me chatting happily. I wasn't listening to their conversation. I was biting my lip in deep thought when I got a strange feeling. I looked back and my breath hitched. This guy was starring at me from a few seats back.

We stared at each other for a few seconds. He blinked, shook his head, then looked away quickly.

"Alex!" Alice and Lakoda said in unison, bringing me back out of my daze.

I shook my head and looked back at my friends. "What? I asked.

Lakoda looked behind us and asked "Who were you starring at?"

I laughed lightly. "No one."

The bus stopped and Alice and I said our good-byes to Lakoda and got off. We were half way home when I got the feeling that we were being followed. I turned around and saw it was him walking slowly behind us starring at the ground. He looked up and his eyes caught mine. We both stopped walking and were still starring.

I felt a tap on my shoulder. I turned slightly to find that we were alone. I looked back at the boy, who was still standing there, starring. I started to back away slowly, he remained still. The wind picked up a bit, whipping my hair across my face. The sun went down a little more, it was dusk. As suddenly as the wind picked up, it ceased. A howl tore through the still night air. We both looked to my left, towards the woods that lined the street. I looked back at him. His eyes were glued to something in the woods. I followed his gaze and saw one pair of honey eyes starring straight at me. I heard him grown, and I knew the boy heard him growl.

He ran for me just as the shifter leaped at me. He took my hand and we ran for my house with the shifter close at our tails. We ran inside and I slammed the door just as he lept. I heard a thump then whining as if in pain. In my head I heard, 'You won't see the last of me. I told you your powers wouldn't come in time.' He was threatening me.

I sighed and leaned my forehead against the door.

"Are you alright?" asked a cute southern voice.

I smiled a little. "Yeah." I turned to see his dark brown gaze on me, his features relaxed. "What about you?"

"I'm fine." His accent was so cute! I almost forgot that we had never met. I just let a complete stranger into my house.

"Sorry, I forgot. I'm Alex. And ... who are you?" I asked, chuckling lightly.

He laughed softly, a sweet sound. "Kit," he said. "We just moved here a few weeks ago."

"That's why I don't know you," I said, pushing past him to get to the living room to look out the window. He followed me.

"Yeah." He paused. "Is it normal for you to let total strangers into your home when no one is there?" His question caught me off guard.

"Well . . . I . . . uh," I stuttered. I couldn't form words. I went to the window and looked out. "Our things are still in the middle of the road," I said, still looking outside. It seemed safe enough. I did a psychic scan and didn't feel anything out of the ordinary.

Except my mother.

Coming up the street.

Rapidly.

"Shit," I muttered to myself. I looked at Kit and sighed. "Okay, I don't mean to sound rude, but you gotta go, dude," I said walking to him and pushing him out of the door and apologizing. I went back to the window to watch him walk away and my mother pull up into the drive. She got out of the car and I raced through the living room to the kitchen and up the stairs, taking them two at a time. As I landed on the top floor, I heard the door open and my mother calling my name and telling me she's home. I walked back down the steps and met my mom in the kitchen.
