Chapter 7 ~ Secrets Kept
I awoke with a start. Something crashed downstairs. I ran to see what it was only to find my mother in the kitchen on her hands and knees picking up shards of a glass she dropped. I sighed and she looked up.
"Sorry, did I wake you?" she asked, getting off the floor and taking the shards with her.
I rubbed my eyes and stiffled a yawn. "No," I lied.
"Nice try, little witch. It's too late for you to be up." I looked at the clock on the stove. it read 10:25 PM.
"I guess," I said.
"You should go back to sleep."
I nodded my head and walked back up the stairs. As I was walking back to my room, I heard another crash and a slew of curses. I chuckled and went to lay down. I tossed and turned for about an hour and deciding sleep was not an option, I got out of bed and went back down to the kitchen to get something to eat. When I got down there, the kitchen was dark. I flipped the switch to turn on the lights, but they wouldn't come on. I flipped it off then back on and still nothing happened.
"Shit," I muttered to myself. I put my hands out in front of me and felt against the counters. I walked a few steps and stepped in something warm and wet. I reached down to the drawer that was there and fumbled with the flash light. Turning it on, I shined it on the floor and saw what I was standing in.
Blood.
I gasped, covering my mouth with my free hand. I moved the light across the floor where the blood streaked across it. I followed the dark trail down the hall past the basement door to the end hall closet where the trail ended. I took a deep breath in and steeled myself for the sight I was about to see.
I grasped the door handle and slowly turned it. It squeaked open and I shone the light into the empty blood splattered closet.
"That's weird, it ends here," I said to myself. I shone the light around the closet and saw that the back wall was a little set back from the other wall on the left. I walked the rest of the way into the closet and pushed lightly and the wall gave way like a secret door. The small room glowed with the light of a single candl but that's not what caught my eyes.
My mother lay on the stone floor in a pool of her own blood. I heard a scream tear through the silent house and realized it was my own. I looked above her to see a peice of paper tacked to the stone wall. I walked over and plucked it off. Shining my light on it, I realized it was a letter
Alex,
If you get this, I'm dead. I want you to go to the church at midnight on a full or new moon. Make sure the chruch is empty first before you do anything. You will need a full length mirror. Bring with you the red ribbon I bought you a while ago, a full can of salt, seven red candles, and a lighter or matches. Tie the ribbon around the mirror and sprinkle salt around it. Place the seven candles around the salt and draw three upside down crosses with the number 666 under it. Light the candles and turn out the lights. Concentrate and in a few minuets close your eyes and count to ten. When you open them, someone else will be infront of you. That man ... That man is Lucifer ... Your father. I'm sorry I never told you the truth, but not only are you a witch, but you are also half demon. You have a bigger task that awaits you beyond this. You must kill Sage. You will need training and your father would be the one to do it. I believe in you.
Mom
I folded up the letter and left the room. I went up to my room to change and called Alice. It rang three times before I heard a groggy, "Hello?"
"Mom died."
"What?!" I heard her shuffle out of bed and rummage through her closet. "I'll be over in a jiffy!"
"Good, becuase we need to talk. See you soon." I hung up and got dressed, putting the letter in my jeans pocket. I found the black and red backpack purse mom bought me for my birthday a year ago in the closet. I rummaged in my nightstand for the red ribbon and a lighter and threw them in the bag with a box of red chalk. Walking down to the kitchen, I heard the front door open and close. I held my breath and pressed myself against the wall untill I heard the familure sobs down in the kitchen. I sighed and rushed down to my crying sister.
"I know. I'm sorry," was all I could say as I held her. Why it hurt her more than me I will never know, but it did. After a few minuets, I sat her down in the kitchen table and sat down with her.
"You said you had to talk to me?" she sniffled.
"Yes. And don't freak, please don't freak." I took a deep breath. "I've lied to you my whole life. The number one rule was to never tell a mortal but ... I'm a witch."
She just sat there, silent. A few seconds passed, then a few minuets of just silence. Finally she broke it.
"Really?" she asked. I didn't realize i was holding my breath until I let it out in a huge sigh and laughed.
"Yeah. Really," I laughed.
"So ... Do you, like, have powers and stuff?"
At that question, my smile faded. "Well ... No." My eyes shifted to the ground and I shrugged. "I'm a pretty pathetic witch. I was supposed to get them on my birthday, but they never showed, but I know potions."
"Then you're not a pathetic witch," she smiled and I smiled back. I got up and walked to the cobard above the stove and grabbed the salt. Putting it in my bag, I turned to Alice.
"I also found out just recently that not only am I a witch, but," I looked to Alice, "I'm also half demon," I pulled the note from my pocket and handed it to her. As she read, her eyes grew wide. After a few seconds, she handed it back.
"So we're going to do this?"
I smiled.
