Chapter 4 ~ Date

Sunday passed in a shifter-free blur and Monday came too fast. I woke up early to take a shower and make breakfast for me and Alice, who always comes over and wakes me with the smell of bacon. I was setting the food on the table when I heard a key in the door, the bolt slide open, the door open, and footsteps down the entry hall. I looked up from putting a plate of bacon down and saw her standing in the doorway with a surprised smile on her face.

"Wow, Alex! You really did all this?" she asked, dropping her book bag and coming to take a seat. Her dark brown hair was down, falling half-way down her back.

I smiled at her and sat down. I opened my mouth to speak, but she beat me to it.

"Look, I'm sorry about Friday, when I disappeared."

I looked up from my eggs that I was playing with subconsciously. "It's OK." I smiled

"OK," she smiled back. "So . . . What happened Friday?"

I gulped. "Nothing," I lied, looking at my plate, "just a dog chased me and Kit here. That's all."

She gave me a questioning look. "Kit?"

I smiled slightly. "Yeah."

"OK, we gotta go to the bus stop. It's almost time." she helped me clear away everything. We grabbed our bags and were out of the door.

Lakoda was already at the bus stop but Kit was no where to be found. I was kind of sad that he wasn't there.

We closed the distance between us and Lakoda. Her and Alice started talking and I started thinking. I was thinking about Kit and, surprisingly, the dream again. Kit seemed so nice, but in the dream he was filled with so much hate it was overwhelming, even thinking about it made me a little depressed. I sighed and looked up from the ground. My eyes locked with someone else's. Kit. I smiled and so did he.

Alice saw me looking and tapped my shoulder. "Who are you looking at?" She turned her head and saw him and told Lakoda to look.

"Oh," Lakoda said with a smile, turning back to me, "he's looking back at you. Go over and talk to him!" she smiled even wider. She and Alice looked at each other then back at me. I got a slightly bad feeling, like I knew what they were thinking. And I was right. They both started to push me in his direction.

I sighed and walked the rest of the way to him with both of their eyes watching my every move. I stopped in front of him and, before I could get one word out of my mouth, he swept me into a big hug, I didn't think my feet were touching the ground. I tensed slightly then relaxed and put my arms around him and smiled. We stayed like that a few seconds more then he pulled back.

"Sorry," he smiled sheepishly, rubbing the back of his neck and looking at the ground.

"It's fine," I laughed. I heard giggling behind me and turned to see my friends look quickly at each other with smiles on their faced. I smiled back and rolled my eyes at them, turning back to Kit.

"So," he looked at my friends then back at me and dropped his voice to just over a whisper, "what are you doing Saturday?"

I smiled. "Nothing. Why?"

He smiled back. "I was wondering if you wanted to go out, maybe to the beach?"

"Yeah, I'd like that." Just as I said this, the bus pulled up and we all got on. Alice and Lakoda sat in a seat in the middle and we sat behind them. The girls turned around and we talked until we got to school.

I spent my whole first class doodling. Same for my second. (Can't you tell how well I pay attention in class?) But, as I was walking outside, alone, to my third, I felt like I was being watched. I turned around to see that I was still completely alone. I ran to my class. After my last class at the end of the day, what happened was forgotten . . . Almost.

I was walking to the bus alone when Kit caught up with me.

"Hey," he smiled.

I smiled back. "Hi."

"So, I know I asked you out for Saturday, but I have another question."

"OK."

He stopped and looked down shyly. I stopped and faced him. "Will you go out with me?" he asked.

I gasped. "As in dating? Like . . . a couple?"

He nodded. "Never-mind. I knew-"

"Yes," I cut him off. He looked up.

"Really?" He sounded surprised.

I nodded my head and smiled. He smiled back and took me into his arms then we walked to the bus together. Alice and Lakoda were already on the bus so we sat behind them again. I leaned over the seat and told them. They squealed happily. We spent the rest of the ride talking. When our stop came, we said bye to Lakoda and got off the bus.

"I'm just gonna run home and leave you two alone," Alice said, winking at me. I rolled my eyes.

"Whatever," I laughed. "Love you."

"Love you too." She ran.

Kit walked me the rest of the way to my house. He smiled. "So, I'll see you tomorrow?"

"Yeah," I smiled back and unlocked the door. Ice met me in the hall. I smiled at my cat and she followed me up to my room. We both sat down on my bed so I could study. I pulled out my notebook, but when I opened it, it wasn't notes I saw.

It was a drawing.

I flipped through my notebook and saw more. Some of just Kit, some of both of us, and others of a wolf and Kit. There was one, though, done in color. Of a battle, blood shed everywhere, and the one behind that? The last picture in the book?

Sage.

With his foot on the dead body of a girl.

Me.
