Cherry applied a coat of mascara over her eyelashes. Vivienne's voice came from the other side of her phone, which was located on the edge of her vanity. "So we're not getting ready for this game together why?"

"Just because I'm gonna be a little late and I don't wanna waste your time." Cherry lied easily, studying her reflection.

"Yeah, right. Better not be ditching me for Finney again."

"I'm not. Also, Viv, c'mon. He's not even bad."

"Just say you want him."

"You're stupid. It's not like I'm hanging out with him or anything."

"I would pray you weren't."

Finney's hand lingered above the doorknob of the barely open door. The girl's voice lingered in his eardrums.

He knew he shouldn't have been listening, but he couldn't get himself to stop.

"Definitely not. That was one time." Cherry claimed, setting her makeup down back on the counter.

"One time too many. He's weird." Vivienne insisted.

The curly-haired boy turned and rushed down the stairs as quietly as he could.

His throat was closing up. Why was it doing that? His eyes were feeling a little glossy, too. It didn't help that his face was warm with the familiar tinge of embarrassment.

He fumbled with the doorknob but froze when he heard her steps.

"Finney! Why didn't you text? I thought you were, like, a burglar." Cherry questioned the boy whose back faced her.

"I was about to." He lied, wiping at his eyes before turning around.

"It's fine. Help me pick out what to wear." The girl spun around, making her way back up the stairs.
