Cherry sat opposite to her father. The man had just barely let go of the bone-crushing hug he'd pulled her into, looking her over for any injuries.

"Dad, I'm fine." She said, resisting the urge to move his hand away from her arm.

"Okay. Okay." He said, slowly letting go. "I checked in with the sheriff this morning. The letter was written in pig blood, so they're thinking it's just a prank."

Cherry listened as her father rambled about the open investigation.

When he finished, the girl shifted under her father's gaze, as he pressed on and on about questions that would help during research. She gave unenthusiastic answers each time.

"Can I go get ice cream?" Cherry asked, crossing her arms.

"Do you really think that's a good idea?" Her father replied, peering out the window at the sky which was slowly tinging with sunset.

"It's not like I'm gonna die. You can't lock me up in here. Please?"

"Fine. But take Vance with you. Lord knows I've bailed that boy out of enough cells for him to do me this favor."

The girl squealed and hugged her father, grabbing her keys as he shouted safety instructions from the front porch.

He mimicked throwing punches until the car was far enough out of sight.
