Wednesday morning, Zim's seat at skool was vacant. Dib was not quite sure what to make of it. Because he had not expected Zim to be at skool earlier in the week, yet he was. And now... he was not. There was no rhyme or reason to him attending skool.
And without Zim at skool, the entire day was spent on the edge of fear and boredom. Dib did not know where Zim was or what the menace was up to. What if he was making some sort of virus that could wipe out humanity in minutes? And Dib would not be able to stop him because he was stuck at skool!
Boring skool... that dragged on... and on... and on...
"Dib, wake up!" Ms. Bitters' harsh voice screeched at him, snapping him out of a trance.
Dib snorted slightly and sat up straight. "I'm up, I'm up! I wasn't sleeping!"
"Sure you weren't, Dib," Ms. Bitters growled. "I'd send you to the principal right now, but he would just send you back."
The bell rang.
"Finally!" Dib cheered, leaping up from his seat.
In a matter of seconds, the halls were flooding with kids eager to leave the confines of their classrooms. Dib wormed his way through the crowds and took off running from the skool, headed to Zim's house.
"Stupid green alien! I'll find out what his dastardly plan is!" Dib yelled to himself.
But the neighborhood surrounding Zim's house was surprisingly quiet. The shone down, reflecting softly off the pavement. A slight breeze rustled the grass and a dog barked in the distance.
Dib slowed to a stop on the border of Zim's lawn, surprised that everything seemed so calm. Besides an occasional distant animal noise, there was complete silence.
The chaos must be inside.
Dib clenched his fists and marched up to the front door. He tried the door first, and the handle did not budge.
Dib sighed. "Ugh, the one time he locks the door..."
He slammed his fist into the door repeatedly. "Open up, Zim! I know you're in there, you dirtbag!"
There was some shuffling and the door opened with a jolt. Zim glared at him through the gap, with some grease stains smeared across his face.
"Haven't you done enough damage? Get away, I don't want to see you ever again," Zim growled.
"What are you planning, Zim!" Dib screamed, ignoring Zim's comment.
Zim huffed and slammed the door shut. There was a click and the door was locked.
Dib spluttered angrily. "Hey! You don't get to just ignore me! Open the door!"
The lawn gnomes next to the pavement jumped to life, their bright red eyes aimed at Dib.
"Ack!" Dib yelped. He dashed for the edge of the lawn, hot lazers searing at the ground by his feat.
Once he stepped foot on the street, the gnomes powered down.
Dib growled and gnashed his teeth. "Ziiiiiim!!!!"
After some time, Dib managed to sneak his way up to Zim's window and peered inside.
Zim's ship was still in pieces on the living room floor, the mess seemed to have been untouched. But Zim was picking up pieces of the ship and sorting them into piles.
He had made very little, if any, progress.
After that, Dib decided to go home. It would take Zim weeks to fix that ship, he was almost building it from scratch at this point.
