Kaeman stood at the edge of the island, staring off to the distant Spider's Den. It had been over a decade since Jythar's legions had attacked. Before that, all of the islands had been one. The people lived peacefully, without greater powers to haunt their existence.
Kaeman let his thoughts overtake him as he recalled the events of the great Calamity.
The year was 1110. It had started with the earthquakes, as the ancient creatures arose from below the surface. Kaeman had been in the Spider's Den, fishing to feed his family. Booming could be heard in the distance as the long dormant volcano roared to life, spewing Sulphur from all directions. It had been going on for days now, and the people of the kingdom had accepted it as the norm.
Kaeman heard marching behind him, and as he turned, he saw battalions of the king's finest soldiers marching towards the volcano. He ran towards the leader and inquired as to what was happening. No response was given other than a stern point towards the caldera at the top of the volcano. Kaeman squinted his eyes to see what was being referenced, and then he saw it. A towering dragon, breathing fire and ash from its maw. He watched as more and more of them crawled out from inside the volcano, utterly in awe.
He was broken from his trance by the army continuing to march and yelling at him to return home, as he was not able-bodied enough to fight. Kaeman happily obliged, wanting to return home to his wife and daughter Rose as soon as possible.
He ran like the wind, and was amazed at the amount of forces the king had sent to counter this assault. Slowly, he observed as the armies devolved from the royal guard, to the army of the commonwealth, to mercenaries, and then finally, civilians. The king had sent everything he had, even civilians, to the dragons.
Upon his arrival home he found his wife crying in the corner. Kaeman rushed to comfort her, but when her face turned to his, he couldn't help but break down in tears. Her face held such a sorrow that Kaeman instantly knew that something terrible had happened.
"The king... he sent out calls for civilians to fight... They..."
Kaeman urged Sarah on, hoping to God that his worst fears were not true.
"They took Rose!"
He felt his heart sink through the floor and leave his body. No, that can't be true. Rose was only 15! His eyes flowed with tears and a cry of anguish in its purest form escaped his body. This was truly the worst thing that could happen.
Kaeman snapped out of his trance, tears rolling down his face. It had been 11 long years. His wife, Sarah, had never been the same. He had never been the same. But now it was time to exact revenge on the king that had taken his daughter from him.
