Devyn's POV.
" Hello Devyn. "
Those words ring through my head, bringing up unpleasant memories from my childhood. I shake my head to rid myself of those thoughts and walk forward to where I could see him.
He's standing over a pot on the stove. It smells like chili. Thought I'm not 100 percent sure about that yet. He turns to look at me. A small smile graced his lips.
" Welcome home. " he said.
My hopes lift just a little at his nice greeting. He looked good. He always looked so tired and grumpy before. He also drank a lot before. I sure hope he doesn't now.
" Hello father, how are you?" I ask nicely.
He barks out a laugh. " This isn't your first time meeting me. No need for formalities. " he said with a smile.
It may not be my first time meeting him, but it might as well be. It's my first time meeting this version of him. I manage a small smile and his body relaxes at that. " How was your trip?" He asked.
I shrug and place my hands in my pockets. " It was decent enough. Kind of flew by. " I say.
" Lost in thought when driving. I understand. Time sure flies when you do that. " he said. I smile again. " Well anyway, I'm glad you made it here safely. Thank you for not rifling through my things. What book do you have there?"
" It's the first book to the Harry Potter series. " I say.
" Ah those books. I haven't read them, but I've seen the movies. " He says.
My eyes widen. " There are movies?!" I question.
He laughs. " Yes. One for each book. Currently they are only on movie five. We will have to sit down one day and have a movie marathon. " he says.
I nod in response and grin. That does sound like fun. I've never done that with my dad before. I'm excited for it.
" Good. Hey, would you mind setting the table. Chili is almost done. " he says.
" Is it....? " I start to ask.
He interrupted me. " Yes, I used deer meat instead of hamburger. " he says.
I grin wildly at that. I missed Deer chili so much. " Yay. " I say.
He laughs. " Man, I missed how excited you'd get for this meal. "
I simply giggle and go to set the table. As I do that, I ponder over the first interaction we've had in person since he left. I like that he's nicer.
Though he seems more buff then the last time I saw him. He's six foot tall with dirty blonde hair, plus he has a neatly trimmed beard. It was a full beard too. He has some grey in it as well. My fathers name is Elijah.
My father can be nice at times. I'm not going to get my hopes up too much. I've been let down way too many times before.
My father isn't usually a nice person. His true studs usually shows when he gets angry or annoyed. I wonder why he's acting so nice today? Maybe he has changed? Do people really change when they're abusive?
I'm not sure what to think. I guess I'll just have to let this play out. Father soon comes in carrying the pot of steaming chili and sets it on the hot pads in the middle of the table.
The into I got smell of the chili fills the room even more and I can't help the smile that slides onto my face. He then ent and got some corn chips and crackers for the chili as well as two glasses of tea.
He sets them down and the two of us start to eat. The first bite was amazing. I sure did miss this chili.
" So how was the library? Did you meet anyone?" Asked my father.
" It was nice. I met someone named Adrian. He is the one who showed me this book. " I say.
" Ohh?" He asked.
I freeze at the slight drop in his tone. " Yeah. He merely showed me the book and left. " I say.
My father grins at me then. " Good. So you had fun?"
" Yeah, I did. The librarian is sweet as well. " I say.
He chuckled. " Yes she is. I've talked to her a few times as well. " says my father.
I nod and we continue to eat in silence. What was with that weird drop in his tone? Could he still be the man he was before? Completely possessive of anyone living in his house?
I surly hope not. I don't need to deal with that right now. I already have way to much on my plate. Gosh, I wish I could go back to moms. Things were more simple there then they were here.
This is my first day and already I don't know what to think. " So I was thinking..." starts my father, snapping me out of my thoughts. " I may have sounded mean when you mentioned the guy you met. I am so sorry for my tone dropping. I am ok with you making friends. In fact, there's a BBQ my friends are having tomorrow night. They're bringing their kids and I figured you could join me and meet some of the people here. Trust me, they aren't little kids. They're around your age. " he said.
My eyes widened. He apologized for how he spoke to me. He's never done that before. I smile " That sounds nice. Thank you father. I would love to go. " I say.
He grins widely. " That's wonderful. You won't regret it. " says my father.
I chuckle at his antics. We continue eating and soon set off ti bed once we washed everything. I have the meeting at noon with Adrian and his friends. I hope it all goes well.
I feel a tad hopeful here now. Who knows, maybe this will all work out for the better in the end? Maybe a new start is exactly what I needed to have? Ether way I'm happy for it and with that, I close my eyes and drift off into sleep.
